I suppose the Founding Fathers - often cited by fortune tellers, necromancers and charlatans for possessing the wisdom to know what would work for us in the 21st century - should have included the right of pit bulls to maul bare arms, to eat the faces of defenseless old women and children and to tear the ass out of the occasional chihuahua. How does anyone keep a "last meal" down knowing that in a few minutes you're going to have your brain sautéed? As a child during the Pleistocene Period, I used to read accounts of 'last suppers' for the condemned and actually felt some sort of envy that they could have all of that good food when my family couldn't afford T-bone steaks or pork chops.

Yes, the efficacy of capitol punishment is elusive and is hardly a deterrent to committing capitol crimes. As has been pointed out: in 18th century England, one could be hanged for pickpocketing; and yet at the hangings of these 'criminals', pickpockets worked the crowd. And so it goes....
