I'm convinced (not that it's a hard concept to imagine, granted) that in about a decade she's going to publish a whole new series featuring the kids, and all the movie actors will be old enough to plausibly play their older selves in the movies. Mama needs a new pair of shoes!

I don't think this is a racism thing. There are a couple of QFCs in the northend that have the handless bags by default, and if you want the ones with handles, you have to stoop down and rummage around below the self-check automabot and find them. So maybe it's biased against old people, or people with back injuries?

"Isn't that the opposite of how an efficient business—O'Toole has repeatedly said she'd like run SPD like one—would operate? If there are employees who aren't on board with the change she's pushing, shouldn't they be penalized in some way?"

Um, actually, in a business in which you have long-term employees - in this case with tenure - bringing in the hatchet man isn't "the most efficient" way to proceed. You'll read plenty of management books - and hear from real life managers, like me - that reaching out to and slowly swaying the doubters to your side is by far the more "efficient" way of proceeding. As much as it may disappoint you, starting a bloodbath isn't usually the best first step.

Oh, good! It looks like our plan to spread democracy and freedom like chlamydia is proceeding apace. These people are clearly freely choosing to form a horribly backwards Islamic Caliphate by voting with bullets. Hooray!

What do we want?? A living wage! When do we want it?? Two thousand five hundred and fifty five days from now!!!

Seven years?! Why not just make it 173-year phase in? Hey, low-wage worker - in SEVEN years you might be able to afford this city, if you can hang on that long, and cost of living doesn't rise during that time (ahahahahahaha).
Apr 22, 2014 el ganador commented on How Did Hollywood's Leading Men Get So Ripped?.
Yeah, I just don't think a Hollywood steroid scandal is in the cards. I mean, who *doesn't* think those guys are jacked up on 'roids? There's no way, as mentioned above, that any dude over 35 is going to be built and ripped like that without test, HGH, and any number of other things. I think they get away with it because it has become expected, and the hypersexualization of the male form is well underway.

So - steroid scandal? Not likely. Huge body images for young men? very likely. And all of the issues that go with that when/if they discover that bodies like that aren't natural or easy to come by.

And this from the 44 year-old who thanks to a Low T prescription for test is finally getting the gym body I've always wanted.

My beard gets me so laid so often that any suggestion to remove it is never seriously considered. Even if it's a trend about to go into decline, the massive beard has been good to me.

I grew up in the 70s/80s when the prevailing thought was "a man with a beard is hiding something". In my aged wisdom I realize that the dick who said that probably couldn't grow a beard, and was compensating for his own shit.

We won't have hit peak beard until we've got some Rutherford B. Hayes beard action going on in the White House again.

...not an entirely fair comparison, but....

We were just in Sydney, Australia for two weeks, where tipping is largely absent for restaurant staff and cabbies, because the minimum wage is $16.37 AUD per hour. The cost of living in Sydney is high - reminded me of SF or NYC - but there was absolutely no shortage of restaurants and pubs.

I think a salient point here is that if we do this, maybe we lose X% of existing restaurants - but maybe they get replaced with better performing establishment. There was no shortage of small pubs and indie bistros in Sydney who seemed to have figured out how to stay in business.

Interesting look at Australian wage law, including pay for youth and apprentices:….
