I Guess It's Time for Another Patriotic Beg-A-Thon.
This has happened many times over the years since Ivar passed away and his company didn't share the same civic vision. Really the city doesn't have the civic vision it should have. Seattle is happy to let private companies have fireworks or not, that is how we ended up with two competing shows for a number of years. In a real city it would be a regular city function and the city could sell sponsorships but at least the organizing would be taken care of.

Happenings at 23rd and Union.
Finally some action...
While there should be more options for banking nearby, Union street has been in desperate need for some energy input. at one point recently 3 out of 4 corners were vacant. There is new construction happening all over the city but there is still a neglected hole in the ground here. I am so happy to hear that there is revitalized interest in this corner. It is so nice to hear more than lip service about making something happen on Union.

What Progressives Need to Understand About Gun Control.
Legislators who proposed gun safety measures seem to jump right at banning certain types of weapons and leave the rest of the rules untouched. What never seems to get much traction is the idea of regulating the weapons we already have. Lets require all guns to have annual tabs and insurance just as cars do. Lets have weapon operators licenses for anyone wanting to possess, operate, or buy ammunition for a firearm. The licenses would need to be regularly renewed with retesting and clear mental health documentation provided by a Psychiatrist. The gun show loophole would be closed because an operators license would be required to purchase a fire arm and transfer the title. Individuals would be free to own as many firearms as they are willing to license and insure. We already use this approach for many other useful and dangerous things such as cars, motorcycles and boats. Lets regulate firearm operators well and require responsibility for their right to arms.

Whites Only.
@#15 That movie is called "Underground" and is by Kusturica who has also made some fabulous and hilarious Gypsy movies such as "Black Cat, White Cat". His work is totally worth tracking down and watching.

The Washington Restaurant Association Loves Republicans.
When we opened our restaurant in '05 we naively signed up as members of the WRA. When we started getting the e-mails and found out what they were lobbying for in Olympia it was like wearing polyester and we dropped that in a hurry. Yes they are very right-wing and it is a shame that they claim to represent all restaurant owners.

Would You Like to Know Why I'm Wrong?.
Even if someone technically had THC in their blood over the level, if the car is being driven in a safe manner what is the chance of being hauled in for a blood test? If the car is being operated in a safe manner then it is unlikely to be pulled over. Unless a police officer suspects impairment, it is unlikely a person will be hauled in for a blood test. First you would have to get pulled over for something, then seem impaired, then fail a field sobriety test, then be required to take a breathalyzer test, and then be hauled in for a blood test. If you don't appear impaired the officer is not going to waste their time taking you in but will just issue a citation and go on to look for the next person.

The Mormon Church Is Mitt Romney's (Tax) Umbrella.
It is probably time in this country to exercise the separation of church and state by having organized religion be free market and not tax exempt. There is an awful lot of real estate and investments in church hands that we are all subsidizing by providing government services at no charge.

City Hits Milestone on Transit Plan That Could Bring "Rapid Streetcar" to Downtown Seattle.
I think it is great that transit planners in Seattle are proposing CONNECTING things. One of the biggest frustrations with the modes that we have is that they almost but don't quite connect with the next mode. The SLUT doesn't go into Westlake and connect with either the tunnel or the monorail. There is no easy crossing between LINK, the Train station, and Sounder trains. The Burke-Gillman trail disappears into the gravel in Ballard.
This connector is a great idea as it starts to stitch things together a little.
