Oh and believe me, there are plenty of folks who think my work is exactly what the author claims it is not. Throwback racist imagery does not, and should not go down easily for anyone. But work with it is something I must do. I hate being evoked as a convenient example without being consulted.

I am not too sure my name should be bandied about in this article as an example of the 'good negro' who's on the right side of the law. I am interested in history and the sustaining stories and mythologies that determine or misrepresent identity. And I am also really affected by the rules- of behavior and speech, especially when they are broken as they so often are. This guy loses the respect of many, friends and colleagues strangers like me by his unwavering; and in many places, illegal speech. But I don't think this is the first time this has happened, that a successful white male artist is proven to have racist sexist ideas! It never fails to surprise me how willing some folks are to render such racism invisible.

Hm... Kara "Williams" just wants to mention that she's just completed the first chapter of work dealing with white supremacist/nationalist mythology- especially its growth in reaction to black nationalist efforts of the 20th c. "Rise up ye Mighty Race" will be on view at the Chicago Art Institute at the end of February 2013. I might add, just my opinion here, but the artworks themselves, all artworks, are open to misinterpretation and redemption, even when the artists insist otherwise.
