(From The Minneapolis Star-Tribune)

The Anoka-Hennepin School District has agreed to pay a $25,000 settlement to the family of a high school junior after two teachers harassed the boy and subjected him to classroom jokes, comments and innuendos concerning his perceived sexual orientation

The boy's "fence swings both ways," teacher Diane Cleveland commented during a class in the 2007-2008 school year, according to an investigation by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.

When the boy wrote a report on Ben Franklin, Cleveland allegedly said before the entire class that the boy had a "thing for older men." Another teacher, Walter Filson, said in front of other students that the boy "enjoys wearing women's clothes." When the boy decided to report on Abraham Lincoln, Filson allegedly said, "Since you like your men older ..." the Human Rights report said.

The school district, which has denied it violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act, agreed last month to pay the boy's family $25,000.

The student, Alex Merritt, and his mother, Jodi, filed a complaint with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights in May 2008 on his behalf. He was a student at the district's Secondary Technical Education Program (STEP).

His "fence swings both ways," teacher Diane Cleveland said during a class, according to the investigation by the Human Rights department. Another teacher, Walter Filson, said that Merritt "enjoys wearing women's clothes."

Merritt said he had Cleveland's class before lunch, and Filson's class afterwards. If Cleveland made fun of him for something, he said, she told Filson about it at lunch. Merritt would be teased for the same thing in a new class after lunch.

"I told Ms. Cleveland that I wanted to do a report on Ben Franklin, and she said, 'Why? Do you have a thing for older men?' " he said. "Then I sat in Mr. Filson's class, and he called me 'Mr. Ben Franklin,' and said, 'What do you have for these older men that Ms. Cleveland told me about?' "

"I'd come home from school and clam up," he said. "I got death threats from random kids, saying things like 'Shut up, you queer, and, I'm going to kill you, you queer.'"

According to the investigation, Cleveland also covered the screen during a bathing suit scene in a movie the class was watching, and said "It's OK if [Alex] watches this because he isn't into that sort of thing anyway ... maybe if it was a guy."

The Anoka-Hennepin district disciplined Cleveland, 39, a social studies teacher, after Merritt complained. She was briefly reassigned, and placed on two-day unpaid suspension. Her reassignment included working on a "social studies curriculum development and reflecting on equality and diversity in the classroom," according to the investigation. But she completed only one day of the assignment and called in sick for the rest of the week.

The strange part about his experiences, Alex pointed out, is that he is straight.

He said he is speaking publicly now because "I'm not the first kid this has happened to. I feel bad for the kid who was homosexual in that class, seeing that I was belittled. ... If kids feel like this is what they're going through, at work, at school, at the house, you've got to tell somebody."

Wow...

So in Anoka Minnesota it's the teachers and students who tag team making a Gay student's life miserable.

That's the news from Anoka, Minnesota - the real Lake Wobegon, were the Women Social Studies Teachers are bitter insensitive cows, the Men Law Enforcement Teachers are emotionally retarded closet cases, and all the Children just want to graduate and get the hell out.

I would urge everyone to listen to the words of the ELCA Presiding Bishop, Mark Hanson, who in a heartfelt "Pastoral Letter" the the church spoke of his hopes of how not just Lutherans but all Christians can move forward in Unity even with our disagreements. You can see the video here

Hey there Dan!

Yesterday was an amazing day. Here in San Francisco, we had hundreds of thousands of people, from all walks of life, and all hues on the spectrum of humanity come together and celebrate San Francisco's LGBT Community.

From celebrities gay and straight, like Cloris Leachman and Jai Rodriguez to powerful straight allies. Like the CEO of one America's largest companies, proudly standing with his LGBT employees, to political leaders from both sides of the ideological fence.

We saw the energy of our youth with Gay Straight Alliances, we saw the joy of our families with our kids, and our Elders with their incredible life stories. We saw the bravery of our soldiers as Lt. Daniel Choi and his fellow West Point "knights out" marched proudly up Market Street. We saw couples with shirts emblazoned with " One of 18,000" reminding us all that same Sex Marriages DO exist in America, if only for some.

People sang, danced, ate (and ate, and ate... "mmmm funnel cakes...*drool*"). People taught and people learned. We saw drag queens, muscle men, and over 200 women on motorcycles all reminding us that, despite the hateful bile, sprewed by the American Taliban, America is "E Pluribus Unum" Out of many, one.

I would hope that this is the message these "Leaders", take to President Obama. That if you are going to use ‘Hope’ as a campaign tool, you can’t ignore the expectations you created by doing so.

Keep up the great work!

I just recieved an email from the DNC via Barackobama.com. Like many such emails I get on a regular basis, it was talking about what the Adminstration is doing and asking me to "Donate Now" This particular email was on health care reform and the subject was :

"This is why"

Here is my response:

Mr President,

I read the email you sent me entitled "This is why". I am not responding to your email's subject. On the issue of health care reform you and I largely agree. You have even met with my boss, George Halvorson, to discuss that issue on a number of occasions.

I am writng to tell you that I cannot donate any more money to you, nor can I give any money to the Democratic party.

This is why...

You have said loudly and clearly that, even though I was born here, I am not an equal citizen of the United States. You have said loudly and clearly that my relationship with my partner, is no different that an incestuous relationship between an Uncle and his niece.

In the brief your administration filed last week in full throated defense of DOMA; you made it clear that you were lying when as a candidate you said you felt the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was abhorrent. You have also made it clear that all your statements about LGBT equality were nothing more than campaign rhetoric to enlist my financial support.

Mr. President, if you truly think that in the space of less than a week, you can call me unworthy of equal protection under the law then, turn around and ask me for money? You are either compeltely out of touch with reality, or the smarmiest poltical opportunist since Karl Rove.

Not much hope there Mr. President, but a lot of audacity, I'll give you that.

So no, Mr. President, I will not "Donate Now!", or ever again. Nor will any of my family or friends "Donate Now", until we hear from you, an equally full throated apology for the hateful, bigoted and discriminatory things your Adminstration has said about me, about my family and about millions of Americans just like me.

Doctor Howard Dean, last night on MSNBC was very careful to emphasize how much better the LGBT community is with the Democratic Party in power than we were or would be under the GOP. To be honest, I am not so sure anymore.

Your actions last week, have given me cause to think It might actaully be better to fight honest enemies, who I know are going to try to stab me in the front, than have to worry about a dishonest friend who I never know when they are going to stab me the back.

This, Mr. President is why, I no longer trust you.

Sincerely
David

Sadly we all know what is going to happen.
John A. over at Americablog has the story

http://www.americablog.com/2009/06/sen-m…

In trying to build a coalition for any sort of meaningful immigration reform the Democrats will feel they have to woo Hispanic Catholics and other evangelical wingnuts (or as they claim to be "The Faith Community") Who have all said that any inclusion of LBGT considerations is a no-go.

Sadly the idea of holding the DCCC's financial feet the fire, as good as it is, will never work. Simply because (as I keep saying) the steaming pile of "leaderhship" of the LGBT "community" - folks like HRC et. al are so enamored with whatever bread crumbs drop from the table they dont dare show any sort of spine.

So there will be immigration reform but we will be told "The time just isn't right to try to tackle any issues around same sex couples, or HIV bans, or assylum claims.. you Gays just need to be patient, after all the tide is changing!"

The Obama Adminstration and the Democrats in congress have found there new gay talking point. - Just wait for the old bigots to die off and THEN we can start to give you your rights.

Yes the Democratic Party is light years better than the slobbering christo-facist GOP alternative. But there MUST BE some kind of consequences for continuously screwing us over.

How soon we forget that it was a Democratic Adminstration ( Bill Clinton) who not only gave us "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", but THEN signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law! With nothing more than hand-wringing and sad shakes of our heads of "Oh he had no choice..." from our so called leaders.

Until there are real consquences for stabbing LBGT Americans in the back there will be NO incentive for our "friends" in the Democratic party to stop doing it, over, and over again.

Sigh...

Ok, I know there is a huge temptation to spin the CA Supreme Court decision upholding Proposition 8 as some sort of "longer term" victory for marriage equality.

Sorry, but no. The only "victory" in the court's decision was the victory of the tyranny of the majority. The CA Supreme Court has said loudly and clearly that if you can get enough votes, (50% plus one), you can take away civil rights from any group you want. You get enough votes from right handed people, you can ban left handed people from getting married!

Sounds silly? Apparently not if you are on CA Supreme Court.

It's time the LGBT Community realizes that marches, rallies, blogs, youtube videos and bumper stickers are NOT going to win this fight. What will? The answer is found by looking at the history of, interestingly enough, the Revolutionary War.

Lately we have seen conservatives holding "tax protest tea parties." These protests sought to invoke the spirit of the Boston Tea Party and early American tax resistance.
Well, ok. In the 1770's the issue was "Taxation Without Representation"

From Wikipedia, -

"No taxation without representation" began as a slogan in the period 1763–1776 that summarized a primary grievance of the British colonists in the Thirteen Colonies. In short, many in those colonies believed the lack of direct representation in the distant British Parliament was an illegal denial of their rights as Englishmen, and therefore laws taxing the colonists (the kind of law that affects the most individuals directly), and other laws applying only to the other groups in several different countries over similar disputes."

Hmmm.. ok, so let me see if I understand this. Being TAXED as a full citizen of a country, while not having the full RIGHTS as other citizens of that country was considered tyranny. So much so that it was worthy of not only tax resistance but even armed rebellion.

Now let me be very clear. I AM NOT IN ANY WAY advocating armed rebellion against the government. ( Besides, the Texas Republican Party has already taken that idea and ran with it.)

But the TAXATION question is an interesting one.

LGBT Americans are taxed as full citizens of our nation while being officially relegated to second-class citizenship. The Republican Party is quite happy with that arrangement, and the Democratic Party is too scared of being painted as being to "pro-gay" to do anything more than just talk about it while doing nothing.

In CA the answer is clear. The State of California is literally broke. The fiscal crisis that looms over our state is massive and overshadows nearly all other issues. If even a moderate percentage of LGBT Californians went and zeroed out their state tax payroll withholding, it would bring the state to a crashing grinding halt nearly overnight.

The answer in the fight for LGBT equality is to use the power of the Gay Dollar. It's time to tell the rest of America that if LGBT Americans are not treated as full citizens, then we refuse to be taxed as such.
