Speaking of Robert Zemeckis (And Amy Dickinson).
I agree that if the grandmother WERE prone to drink herself into an unfit state, this "rule" wouldn't stop her anyway. This letter made me realize that if I had kids right now, I wouldn't want to let my mother take care of them overnight, because my mother actually is an alcoholic and tends to gradually become useless every night after dinner. For me to leave kids with her would require a very long and honest process of treatment beforehand, not simply an admonishment that she better not have anything to drink that night. So I agree that it's likely neither grandparent has a real drinking problem and the parents are just being nuts.

SL Letter of the Day: Should He Finally Meet His "Ex" In Person?.
He's a 20-year-old college kid who's been dating the same girl for three years and loves her and is happy with her but doesn't want to commit to spending the next fifty years with her without ever trying anything/anyone else, which is both normal and reasonable. (The timespan suggests they started dating in high school and have continued well into college, which raises the question of whether this is also a LDR or they made their college choices around each other or what.)
One way or another, he's got to explore something outside of the one current relationship he's in. Some people can marry their high school sweethearts and be completely happy forever never knowing anything else but if he's having thoughts like this he's clearly not one of those people.

Catholic Bishop: Gays Are Not Welcome At Vatican City.
The linked article at Carnal Nation is really misrepresentative of the guy's status; they give the impression he's a legitimate spokesman for Vatican City, voicing an official policy, instead of (as mcFly points out) just some random Catholic official in Kazakhstan saying what he thinks the Vatican should do.

Twitter to "Write" the Next Neil Gaiman Story.
I don't get it. It seems really obvious that they'll get 20 "second sentences" at once, and then 20 "third sentences" at once responding to several different "second sentences", and by that point all hope will be lost. That's what _always_ happens with these things. How can they not recognize this and figure out a system where that won't happen? Why do they think this will work?

Youth Pastor Watch.
God, I didn't read Slog for like six months, then I come back and people are STILL asking "what's the deal with the last guy?"

Regarding This Week's Episode of Hoarders; or, How I Became the Type of Person Who Thinks Certain Mental Illnesses Might Best Be Treated with a Smack Upside the Head.
I thought this episode was one of the best for highlighting how hoarding really is--or can be--an illness. Somewhere in their brains, these people have switches in their heads that they are incapable of switching off even when the most dire consequences are RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. I mean, they had to keep filling those huge storage units with Patty's stuff that had just been sitting in huge piles in the garage, STILL IN THE BAGS FROM THE STORE, and she wouldn't let them get rid of any of it. IF IT'S BEEN SITTING IN THE BAG FOR TWO YEARS AT THE BOTTOM OF A HUMONGOUS PILE OF SHIT, IT'S LESS IMPORTANT THAN YOUR KIDS, PATTY.
But because they so clearly had no choice about being so screwed-up, I found them less irritating than last week's hoarders, who both just seemed like crappy people. Especially Kerrylea, with her "Oh my God the maid threw out my old empty shampoo bottles this is such a violation now I must spend three hours going through each empty bottle and probably keeping most of them how could the maid do such a horrible thing" shit.

Fair Use?.
@18: I don't see anything in the Slog post (or even in the comments, really) suggesting approval of NORML's appropriation of the image (except that Dominic discloses that he's on the NORML board of directors, but it doesn't seem that he was involved in the choice to use the picture). Can you please point out the part of the post that says "it's cool if potheads steal a woman's work"?
