An Abortion Pledge for the Rest of Us.
Jocylyn, I'm yet another vehemently pro-choice young parent who needs to weigh in. There are a lot of commenters who have very eloquently described why your pledge is missing the target. I just want to say that I come away from your pledge, as well as your comments through this thread, feeling really judged. Which is bullshit. I got pregnant when I was 20. I'm happily married, in a stable financial situation, with a fulfilling job and two happy, healthy children that have had an exponentially positive effect on my life. I don't understand how you think you are helping a pro-choice movement by being dismissive towards those that hold the same political stance. Fuck you for judging me for the choices I've made.

Friday Memorial for Officer Brenton.
@3, exactly. This was a man with a family, who served his duty in a difficult and often criticized job. He was, by all accounts, one of the "good ones." I mean no disrespect, but when you compare the inconvenience of this type of memorial to the one for Michael Jackson, I think it's a more sincere show of respect.

Re: Re: The Coming Cupcake Crash.
@18- Alright, sorry for my vitriol. I know that magnolia cupcakes is a long loved institution in nyc (which I loved when I lived there). I was trying to argue for the viability of "all-purpose" bakeries, and not so much against specialized cupcake locales.

Re: Re: The Coming Cupcake Crash.
@14- Wrong. You're dumb. What's being advocated is not a new concept- it's a return to an established, classic concept of a bakery that is done with great success in many places- examples jumping to mind include Madison Park Bakery, Borracchinis, and Columbia City Bakery.
The whole cupcake craze is a new, cutesy, specialized concept. It's not sustainable. All-purpose bakeries are being advocated for because they are not a trend, they've been around forever, and they have an established, successful business model.

Fat Chance.
I'm kind of surprised that she is so upfront: "I, like many of my excessively-overweight peers, don't spend my life committed to losing weight." Makes the gastric bypass seem like an easy way out, when in reality it should be a last ditch effort after lifestyle changes. This is a major surgery she's talking about.

While South Park Slept.
Thank you for this article. I live in Rainier valley, and some of the same issues arise- as well as a community that rallies together to support each other through these cracks. It was wonderful to see the police response to this horrible crime, and I hope it bring continued focus towards a neglected, but diverse and well-focused, south end of the city.

Memo to Metro.
@22- I have been kicking myself: a man got on the bus, sat in front of me and closed (without asking) the window we shared. I was only a few stops away from my destination so I didn't say anything, but now I wish I had. Or, vomited on him- either way, lesson learned. DON'T close a window near a pregnant woman! Heh.

@15- Exact same situation! I'm 5 mos pregnant and every time I had to go on the 7, I would feel nauseaus- it is absolutely the most packed, rowdiest, loudest bus route imaginable. The link changed my commute to work into the most pleasant experience imaginable.
I would be curious what routes the AC buses go on- I feel as though I always notice the eastside buses have AC, and it feels like another example of the south end getting ignored. The 7 is an extremely high volume long route that would benefit greatly from AC equipped buses, and I have never once seen AC on one.
