commented on A Criminal HIV Transmission
Like most crimes, HIV transmission should be criminalized based on intent. Boone's crimes were obviously premeditated. Unintentional transmission, where the person doesn't realize they're positive, shouldn't be criminalized.
Being positive is not a crime, obviously. Willingly transmitting a disease is. If someone knew they had influenza and started sneezing all over an old folks' home, we'd get pissed at them, right?

commented on Gun Owner Kills Intruder
@13: As a gun owner, it is the 72-year-old's responsibility - AS A GUN OWNER - to know when it is appropriate to fire his weapon in self defense. If he is unaware of when it is or is not appropriate to use his gun WHICH HE OWNS, then he shouldn't have a gun.
Period. End of story. This is a news report about an irresponsible, dangerous old man with a gun. Responsible gun owners know the rules and how to use their weapons. This old man did not.

commented on Joe the Plumber...
I understand being qualified for positions like President or (here in ND, where we vote for) judges, but lower level offices - even up to the House of Representatives and the Senate - don't require any qualifications besides being a citizen and over a certain age.
Good for Joe. I'd never vote for that moron in a million years, but that's the beauty of our system: we elect assholes to break stuff, then get to complain about it for the next two to four years.
