It's about time some staffers at The Stranger showed a little courage finally following the sacking of Goldy, for some mix of strong $15 support and TNC opposition.

Tim Keck got behind Kshama, it seems, because it was "the cool thing to do". Once she got into office and proved truly effective on the minimum wage issue, Stranger support faltered, to put it mildly. Your readers actually believed in the politics.

Now that Jess is running, good on these writers for standing up to what they believe in, which isn't a politician well seasoned in "how Olympia works" i.e. cuts to the poor, largest corporate tax giveaways in US history.

@Solk512 - We do "underpay the fuck out of public employees", but not the CEO of City Light, the single highest paid position in Seattle. Increase the pay of all those working for the City of Seattle to $15 retroactively, like the mayor pledged!

And Boswell, what do the authoritarian regimes in Cuba and especially N Korea have to do with democratic socialism? Just as we are "spreading freedom and democracy" via our campaigns to bomb the shit out of poor brown people, the Soviet Union was "socialist". A soviet is a democratic workers' council. The Stalinist system in the USSR was not in any way a union of soviets.

And I have organized in Eastern Washington. Not as right-wing as you might think.
May 31 bogart14 commented on Holy Shit You Guys, I Think This Is Gonna Happen: City Council Votes $15 Minimum Wage Out of Committee.
Boswell, yet again you prove yourself ignorant. I am a socialist. I don't drink PBR. I don't smoke. The only time I've gone into Chipotle is to talk to workers about their rights, and organizing against illegal retaliation for organizing. And I do have an iPhone. That was given to me by someone that got it for free from work. To say it is hypocritical for someone opposed to capitalism to use products manufactured via the capitalist mode of production makes as much sense saying an opponent of Stalinism under the USSR is hypocritical for using goods produced under that system. It makes sense that you dig Ayn Rand. Your inability to think through these things is quite apropos.

It's fun watching Boswell's head explode! @53-Boswell's (collectivism sucks) biggest problem isn't necessarily that he's stupid, it's more that he is a lying, racist, misogynistic, AND stupid.

He's been hiding in shame from all the events he used to come to while screaming "I am John Galt", proving that his moral and intellectual compass come from a lazily written trashy romance novel. I like Paul Krugman's quote on the book: "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Pretty much sums up Boswell.
Apr 29 bogart14 commented on 15 Now's Class Warriors Vote in Favor of Phased-In Wage Bump for Small Businesses.
@a real live employer - is either lying or misinformed. I-518 affected tipped workers, abolishing tip penalties in this state. Employment in that sector increased at a greater pace than the rest of the economy over the next decade. The opposition has no data to stand on, so they lie.

@9 - tkc - In what universe does Sawant or 15 Now vilify small business owners? 15 Now has called for a 3-year phase-in for businesses with under 250. Sawant has consistently said that the real enemy of small buz is BIG biz. Starbucks, Wal-Mart, Target, these kill small business. Get your story straight bud.

-And NO to ANY FORM of total compensation! 250 employees is already a huge compromise on the definition of small biz, 500 is ludicrous!
Apr 12 bogart14 commented on Restaurateurs Had a Minimum-Wage Lunch Chat at City Hall Yesterday, and the Crowd Raged.
@22 your claim is false, Sawant has NOT put small biz limit at 10 employees. She hasn't put forward a concrete number but will very soon.

@43 15 Now and Kshama have proposed a 3 year phase in for small biz, stay tuned for the definition.
Apr 10 bogart14 commented on Restaurant Guy David Meinert Urges Staff to Lobby for Tip Deduction from $15 Wage or "Tips Will Probably Go Away" and Overall Wages Will Drop.
15 Now has NEVER advocated for an abolition of tips. Dave Meinert is LYING out of his wealthy mouth.

@JimR - In 1988 77% of the state voted to increase the minimum wage for tipped employees by 85% over 2 years, and employment in those sectors increased at a greater rate than the rest of the economy. This is a larger increase over a shorter period of time than proposed by 15 Now.

A combination of savings due to reduced turnover and increased productivity from workers, modest profit reductions, and very modest price augmentations, have resulted in no statistically significant reductions in employment, as often these stats show increased employment levels.

The data from all increases in the min. wage shows that the likes of Dave Meinert are liars. But the stats may not relate to the impact of this debate on Meinert's establishments, as socially progressive folks that are aware of his advocacy for poverty wages will steer clear of his establishments.

Apr 9 bogart14 commented on I'm in Favor of a Tip Credit.
@frozenfrog- Absolutely. Big business is not only hiding behind small biz in their attacks, they are using the high end (more white, more male) servers to make the majority of tipped workers that would see a significant increase in their take home pay invisible.

Tip penalty also penalizes cheaper places over high end expensive joints. Your server at a Pho place isn't making $35/hr in tips. So Dave Meinert would see potentially zero dollars in increased labor costs and have even more of an advantage over less expensive places.
