It is telling, seattleblues, that you refer to the act of feeding starving children as 'morally meaningless.' Because it reveals that for you, the morality of "charity" belongs entirely to the giver, who must give voluntarily to receive any kind of morality bonus points. But what of outcomes? Surely the outcome of feeding a child who would otherwise starve is a moral outcome, regardless of how it reflects on those who subsidize it?

About half of Food Stamp recipients are children. If the program is cut, malnutrition and starvation is an unavoidable outcome for many of those children.

He ran out of passes when he started publicly echoing his dad's belief that the Civil Rights Act went too far and that segregated lunch counters should be legal if business proprietors want to have them.

@13: It wasn't that he was "successful." It's that he was one of those insufferable rich people who inherit money and then claim that they earned everything they had through hard work, that all other rich people did the same, and that everybody who isn't rich deserves their fate because they didn't try hard enough. The kind of guy who thinks nothing of earning untold millions by gutting profitable companies and laying off all the workers, who then has the gall to dub himself and his cronies "job creators."

You really expect the GOP to miss a chance to take money from children and hand it to millionaires? Not bloody likely.

And that's how we know that every species of animal in the world can trace its origins to Mt. Ararat. The whole mountain is covered in fossilized animal tracks, leading away in all directions! Kangaroo tracks leading East, bison tracks leading West, and penguin tracks leading South.

And fossilized dinosaur feces, naturally.

@25: I have respect for Chomsky. But a social critic is not the same thing as a politician. It's like saying you trust food critics more than chefs, because a food critic has never cooked you a bad meal.

The Republican appeal to higher income brackets remains pretty solid. They might be able to bring those numbers up even further by yielding on some social issues. But it still doesn't address their underlying problem -- the numbers aren't there based on economic self-interest alone.

One way or another they need votes from substantial numbers of non-affluent people. If not through religious appeals, then how?
