I'd been wondering about this for a long time. I had heard an old podcast where Dan's reaction boiled down to "eww! incest is gross!" I reacted almost exactly like Fuck and Let Fuck in the linked 2002 column. I thought about it a little more and came to the conclusion that jettisoning that cultural taboo would make all family relationships unnecessarily complicated. While I disagree with Dan's point that there can never be true consent, there is a real and profound cost to introducing a possibility that a father could be grooming a daughter to replace her mom or that siblings had a real possibility of romantic entanglement.

I feel badly for the star crossed consenting adults that are denied love, but I don't imagine that there are that many of them without better options than their immediate family.

Thanks for the post!

Is it only a matter of time before we get Savage Love the breakfast cereal? Because I'd probably buy that if it existed.

Damn. 2012 seems like a long way off. :-( I just do not understand the opposition to gay marriage. I've really tried looking for cogent arguments against it and haven't found a single one that makes any sense on a social level. It saddens me to think that it takes hundreds of thousands of hours of work and 60 million dollars to overcome a position that is so fucking backwards and dumb.

oh. my. god. Chalk another one up for the glorious state of Texas. @1 Their songs are indeed all about feet. The Agony of DeFeet, Big Foot, Footography, Back Seat (what does that rhyme with, I wonder).

I'm not a fan of dogmatic statements about the way the world is. Slap on the wrist to Dan for his "you realize" sentence. Still, it's hard to argue that religion hasn't viciously, profoundly fucked up sex and sexuality (for glbt's in particular).

And DBYS (facepalm)... congratulations on quitting Dan's column in a snit and looking like a total scrotum.

Sweet chocolate christ, my state kicks so much ass. The key is to survive the cops and the loaded handgun hanky panky, and the heat, the secessionist governor, and the mother fucking truck commercials.

/facepalm

I'm frustrated by the lack of progress (and especially by the backwards movement of the DOMA brief), but #51's comment is hard to argue with. It reminded me of a conversation I had with my friend (he's gay, I'm straight) when I was expressing my extreme frustration and heartbreak of the prop 8 vote. He was all calm and said reminded me that progress is rarely a straight line.

The bigger picture shows that GLBT rights are nearly inevitable. http://www.stat.columbia.edu/~cook/movab…
I don't take that inevitability to mean that we shouldn't hold Obama's feet to the fire. The faster he/congress/the DOJ actually do something, the better. History won't look back kindly on massive fuckups like the DOMA brief or the DADT discharges.
