Nice one, DEVO.

@Dan, I'm active in Canadian politics, and a man with two moms, and I can tell you that it is going to get much worse in Canada. In fact, this is just one shot in a volley that has been eroding the progressive social values of Canada since the Harper Conservatives took power in 2005.

Last week they also announced a massive defunding of the public health care system, and are currently reversing our soft laws on marijuana, imposing a system of mandatory minimum sentences.

In the realm of gay issues, the Harper government removed mention of marriage equity and acceptance of homosexuality from the guide for new immigrants. When increasing the age of consent (to 16, as I recall), the Conservatives added a special, higher age of consent for anal sex -at least two years more, though I cannot recall the exact change. A few months ago they also blocked a law that would recognize hate crimes against transgendered Canadians. The Canadian constitution would ensure that it will become the case, so the government voting down the law was purely a show of their agenda (and a waste of public money, as now this will have to go to the supreme court to be challenged and ultimately accepted).

Oy. My Moms are in Ontario right now and the Member of Parliament in their area doesn't believe in climate change, is a bigot on many levels, and wins elections with more then 50% of the vote when four people are in the race. Watch out for Canada, and Dan, if you can, think about getting a Santorum'ing of Stephen Harper. You would have a lot of support in this.

Stephen Harper says it's unacceptable, but that just what he does. He won't act. Same thing here in Canada with Climate change and everything else. His government is completely negligent.

My hometown, Halifax, Nova Scotia, has a bunch of stores that have stopped plastic bags entirely. You can buy clothes bags there if you forget yours. The bag they sell are sturdy (I've never had one break) and reasonably priced, at about $1.

I tihnk the use of plastic bags is one of the few environmental issues that's currently simple to solve. It's cheaper for the grocery stores, so they'll get behind it. Simple as that.

It also is an important one psychologically, I would say. It's a opening to a mindset that has some basic understanding of reusing things, and generally moving to a reasonable culture.

I'd love to see this in Seattle! It really worked well in Halifax, and is worth expanding.

I live in Canada, and despite problems, it's WAAAAY better then the US. By the way, no lottery. That's just a lie, not that you couldn't of figured that out, as it came out of Glen's mouth

Just a point on the "journalism" in that CNN clip:
1. They've had a relationship from 2007 to now.
2. In 2007, he was 14 and she was 28.
3. The author featured referred to her as a hepaphile (sp?), someone that is sexually aroused by individuals between the ages of 11-14.
4. The author also mentions that there "must also be some psychopathology" because she asked for the mothers blessing of the relationship.

Now, I don't condone pedophilia OR bad journalism. The pedophelia is addressed already. As far as the bad journalism: Why would she be considered specifically a "hepaphile" if she's now involved with someone who is 16, and especially when she is invested enough to ask for the mothers blessing to continue? Perhaps this is where the psychopathology come in? Perhaps she's a Hepaphile who isn't familiar with the process of aging. On top of all that, the story fails to mention that in some US states, Canadian provinces, and elsewhere in the world, 16 is a legal age to marry. I think the age is right?
Charles Mudede got it right on the fake outrage. It's a crime and I can't imagine this was healthy for the young man, but totally not being examined in a sane way whatsoever on "the news."
