This is what I heard from a reliable source: Gates and his wife are separated and she had changed the locks. He really did try to break in when he apparently did not have any business being there. (I'm imagining John Malkovich breaking back into his house in "Burn After Reading") Probably he was angry at the situation in general, and did, in fact, act an ass to the cops -- who, as usual, acted an ass right back. I'm sure racism did play some role in the escalation of events, but probably not the lead role.
