Re: Boeing The crackpots are those who believe that after getting $8B in tax waivers, and benefit reductions from workers, Boeing would not continue to seek bigger waivers and more reductions even while continuing to move operations to lower-wage regions.

#5, 9 - Much more than a loan. Besides doing nothing to reform the practices or personnel that lead to the crisis, the bailout also required accepting and defending the institutions' valuations of their assets (and looking the other way at the systematic fraud that established those assets and phony valuations).

The ideology that provides the argument that it is socially responsible for the State to reward high-volume owners of capital with control and the financial benefits derived from public assets is called Neoliberalism.

It's the Invisible Hand with its thumb on the scale...

A socialist intervention in the 2008 crisis would have called for public ownership, equity, and a change of leadership in the stricken institutions. Instead, they got a neoliberal bailout and went merrily back to the casino.
