@70, Just want to endorse your recommendation of Cordelia Fine's book. Very good summation of the science behind all this.

@10: "None of this is an excuse for the horrible actions of the boys."

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. It's not an excuse, you just wanted to do your part to make the girls who were raped feel like shit.

Okay then.

@30, Actually for the internet, this is fairly light on the misogynists.

@six five, Women aren't allowed to have tastes and standards? I mean the idea that the world revolves around pussy is laughable -- although for the Republican party, things do seem to revolve around controlling our pussies -- but you seem genuinely aggrieved that a woman might prefer the attentions* of someone she is attracted to over the attentions of someone she isn't. Apparently merely having a pussy requires you to dole it out in some kind of democratic fashion, so that every penis-haver gets "his share."

*Not that the things described in the article count as "attentions." What they are is what they are intended to be, harassment and an attempt to put women in their place for existing in public.

@11, Let's just take your claim (via amateurish but passionate poster, a citation about as credible as a Daily Mail story) about false rape accusations. Dr. Kanin’s study was incredibly poorly done; it found every accusation that did not result in conviction to be "false", even ones dropped for any reason (including police pressure against the victim) well before things got to an arrest. The FBI estimate is 8% -- an unrealistic number going by the rates found for every other crime, but at least within the realm of possibility.

This really has very little to do with Lindy's article. I guess that can count as "well played" if the goal is to turn any discussion about women into "but what about the men?!??!!?"

@37 Right, because it is SO easy to pick up and move to another state, away from friends, family, jobs, support systems, etc. You know nothing of her situation, but feel free to judge her decision on where to live. Not to mention that some people would rather stay and fight for their rights right where they are...

@36 "Um no."
So trans men, who were born female assigned at birth, have no business being in the women's restroom? You are an idiot, true that.

@34 So then I expect you want trans men to use women's restrooms? Which means you are totally fine with someone who looks like a man, but who was born with "lady parts," to use the women's restroom and you won't call the cops or otherwise raise a stink?

Yeah, I don't think so. People should use the restrooms in which they will be most safe and secure from harassment and violence. Period.

@23 Can you imagine what might happen if someone who presents as a woman were to walk into a men's restroom? Do you have any idea of the level of violence trans women and men face? (Start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_bashi… ) It is much safer for a trans woman to use a women's restroom, where she can safely use a stall, free from harassment or violence. (Outside of Texas, anyway.)
