@64 There will always be assholes who tell racist and sexist jokes, and everyone else will correctly regard them as assholes. The End.

This is what school standardization looks like, darlings.

@55 She probably wasn't groped because you were with her. I've been to Rome several times and the street harassment is absurd. A friend and I were once followed for blocks by a creepy man who, despite our evasive tactics, finally caught up to us to share his desire to lick our feet. This creeptastic level of harassment happens in many other European countries and Latin America, where I currently live, as well. Let me tell you, the first time I was aggressively hit on by a military man holding an AK-47 my heart skipped a couple beats. Street harassment is definitely about power but it's not usually that literal.

Basically, the prevailing opinion is that an unescorted woman is free game. When I'm with my husband no one says shit.

Here's an idea. Flood the black market with fake ivory to undermine the trade. The demand for new ivory and prices will be lowered, then once buyers realize there's a lot of fake ivory floating around they'll lose confidence in the market. I have no idea how this would actually work, but it seems like a fine idea. Along with the poacher drone strikes, of course. It's a two-pronged approach.

@18 Retention is highly controversial, mainly because it's expensive and only works in the short term. It's really only appropriate in pre-K, K and 1st grade and even then the research contradicts itself. Usually when a student is far behind their peers there are other factors at work that aren't addressed by simply repeating the material.

Thank you for this Dan. Myself and other teachers are absolutely distraught for our colleagues in Connecticut and are still figuring out how to talk to our students about this on Monday.

Your correlation between the right wing's demonization of teachers as lazy and self-interested as compared with the heroic actions of the teachers in Connecticut is spot on. I've experienced multiple lock-downs in my career (usually due to a shooting in the neighborhood) and in every classroom you would see children huddled in a corner with their teacher in front, protecting them with her body. So yes, I'm exceptionally offended by those who say we don't care about our students because we want fair wages for what we do.

And to those criticizing the traumatized teacher being interviewed by the media- fuck your noise.

@44 You're right the NRA doesn't make laws. They pour obscene amounts of money into preventing any kind of law that would regulate gun ownership from being passed. They can "believe" in gun safety all they want but as long as they actively oppose legislating gun safety we can all feel free to believe that they care more about the rights of irresponsible gun owners than the rights of everyone else not to get shot by them.

Jesus fucking christ. Washington State already has a test teachers have to pass. It's called Praxis II and I had to shell out $110 to take it. I know the Seattle Times loves their corporate school reform, but apparently they're so far in the bag they can't even research the "ideas" they dream up to find out they're already in existence and have been being implemented for years.
