With respect, Tingleyfeelin, it's the seemingly innocuous expressions of racism that can do the most damage. If a child sees a Chinese person represented by a dancer who runs around the stage with their fingers pointed in the air and tipping their heads to and fro (not a feature of the PNB Chinese variation, but popular in many current productions), how is the child to know that this is a demeaning social stereotype rather than an accurate portrayal of Chinese culture? This just normalizes racist stereotypes. It's not just "ballet for ducks sake," it's irresponsible and lazy art.

Argh, Brendan--I have to disagree. The last three pieces *were* cruel, I'll give you that, and the concept maybe artful at some point during its development but the product wasn't interesting enough to be even irritating. I get why I was only shown the first piece when writing the preview (this is Melody, hi!), as the element of surprise was key in the delivery of Kravas's statement but the length of the repetitive pieces was highly unnecessary and kind of a cop-out. Balanchine's done it, Graham's done it and they did it without putting their audience through that kind of pain. Oy vey.

Absolutely bad ass. There's an amazing amount of power in her body, her movements--I never knew synchronized swimming could have this kind of effect on me.

Meh. Dubcek was a badass but he had the help of a weakening communist influence at his back. Not so sure that a subversive Iranian politician would be clever enough to shake off the monkey of fundamentalist Islamicism, but who knows?

Can't decide if I should use "Ditzy Dame" for my pet chicken or as a bowling name.

@1-it's easy to get that impression from the way that ballet is portrayed in movies, tv, etc. However, most ballets, even the old-school stuff, has guys doing smaller, fancy footwork at times and the women in jump and turn sequences that take them all the way across the stage/room. Here's a clip of some serious badassery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viL-HEis…
