18: who gets to decide when various categories of businesses should and shouldn't be open? Plenty of religious fundies object to businesses being open on Sundays or other supposedly holy days. Plenty of people see no reason for any business to be open 24 hours. Businesses open during times when they think people will want to patronise them. If you have a job at a place that is open on holidays, you may have to work. There's no reasonable objection to that no matter how much it sucks.

I also don't get this anti-working on holidays thing. Some people have to work on some holidays. That's what it is to have certain types of jobs, and it's part of living in modern cities. It may suck to have to work on days when most others are off, and it may suck even harder to have to work on days when it seems like everyone else is spending time with their families, but there you are. What surprises me is that people aren't campaigning to improve the safety of workers at places like Walmart on days like Black Friday, who are clearly being placed at risk by the fact that they appear to let large crowds of people into their stores with no apparent way to control them.

Adoption by same-sex couples became legal in Canada in 1995--in the province of Ontario, quickly followed by BC, Alberta and Nova Scotia. That's 17 going on 18 years ago.

For those claiming that bikes are dangerous on sidewalks, how do you account for the fact that bicyclists nearly always ride on the sidewalks in Japan? Event discounting the many streets that are narrow enough that there is no separate sidewalk, there are far more people riding bikes on the average street in Japan than in Seattle, and yet I've never once in Japan seen a collision between a bike and a pedestrian, and riders seem perfectly able to slow down and check for oncoming traffic before crossing side-streets and driveways.

The best bike lanes I've ever seen are in parts of Europe. They follow the same "sidewalk-bike lane-parking-car lane" pattern, but the bike lanes are integrated with (while still separated from) the sidewalk, so they're raised off the street but don't result in the elimination of a driving lane. They also have their own traffic lights.

Is that the issue, #6, or is the issue personal responsibility? It's one thing when a partner lies and says "it's ok, I'm negative." It's a whole other thing when two people have an anonymous or a near-anonymous hook-up and both people make a decision not to use protection.

Look, we should obviously promote shared responsibility: if you have a sexually transmissible infection you're morally obligated to tell your sex partners, and if you're having sex you should protect yourself (and your partners) as much as possible. But what the LAW should say is, if you're asked, you must tell.
Sep 26, 2012 Dingo commented on John Corvino: "Are People Who Oppose Gay Marriage Bigots?".
This video is a confusing mess of self-contraditictions. First, it's framed by this silly bit about being able to deal with NOM only by virtue of drinking alcohol, which although clearly intended humourously, certainly isn't going to be creating warm feelings on the other side.

Then, John calls NOM "anti-gay," which is another way of saying bigoted, before going on to say we shouldn't call people bigots because when you call someone a bigot, you're saying they're outside the realm of polite conversation." No--what you're actually saying is that they are "a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group . . . with hatred and intolerance."

But then, he says that we should fight vigorously for our rights, but "without demonizing anyone," which, he says, is what they do when they say gays are perverts or sinners.

Look, we don't win over sexists or racists by *not* calling them on their bigotry, but calling them on it doesn't mean we can't politely and rationally explain *why* their behaviour is bigoted--being able to get along with someone doesn't mean they aren't a bigot. And John's effort at "building relationships" is accomplishing about as much with NOM as GOProud's effort is with the Republicans.

I liked Cindy. Granted, some of her speaking habits can be irritating, but her message was great, she's funny, and she's one of the only guests who hasn't allowed Dan to constantly interrupt her, rephrase her statements in ways she didn't intend, or change the topic mid-sentence, which are among the highly annoying habits HE has as an interviewer. I'd gladly listen to this episode 10 times over rather than listen to a single episode with Lucy.
