UM, since when do words that occur in laws only have the meanings that the law gives them? I'm pretty sure it's possible to talk about someone being killed in self-defense as being murdered without necessarily implying that it was an illegal act. Rape can be used in terms of a moral claim without it having to be legalistic. It is possible to call something rape, and indeed for it to be rape, in the sense of any violation of sexual consent, without it meeting the legal definition thereof.

Legal definitions are, in fact, always more circumscribed than the colloquial uses of the same words. But the colloquial definitions to not cease to be useful or meaningful simply because a concept has been encoded into law. Seriously, are you this stupid?

@4, @5 While Dan didn't imply that all men have dicks, he did imply that everyone who has a dick is a man, and that implication erases trans folks from the equation just as much as it would have if he had said that all men have dicks.

@Banna (#1): yeah, I know right? It's so damn annoying when those minorities think they deserve not to be erased out of all discourse and ignored and then they expect to be treated with, like respect, and stuff. I mean, really, who do they think they are?

Thanks for this, Dan.

The couples affected by this should demand refunds from the public officials who charged them for services that apparently weren't really performed.

@6: Just rest on the hope that you will one day have that life-saving device. I stupidly proposed to my now-husband, and have nothing more than a plain wedding band to show for it! I'm clearly screwed for life!

@71 Fair enough. I think we may just have a semantic disagreement. I'll hold final judgment until I see what actions are taken to fix the problem, though.

@69 "Why does it surprise you that people put more SEO resources into pharmaceuticals and escorts than womens' health?"

Much of "women's health" falls under the umbrella of "pharmaceuticals."
Siri still directs people searching for condoms to drug stores while telling people looking for hormonal birth control or Plan B that they're out of luck. I'm not surprised that the priorites are as they are (and I haven't said anything indicating that am surpsied; what I am is annoyed), but I don't see how putting more SEO resources into fullfilling men's desires rather than women's needs could possibly be seen as anything other than sexist.

@undead ayn rand
I'm trying to be very careful and clear about not implying any malicious intent here. But structural sexism (in this context, meaning the fact that common issues women face were just not on anyone's radar while finding Viagra and getting blow jobs were) is still a real problem.

@ Doctor Memory
She responds to "I need condoms" with "I found you x drug stores"
There's some sort of thesaurus-trickery involved there. And I don't think it's comign via Yelp. You are correct that I don't know for certain, but it's hard to explain a lot of the discrepancies with just whatever sources Siri uses to pull out answers - she could be taught to use those sources better, and has been parogrammed to (for instance) answer the joke question of where to hide a body with apparently hand-picked places in many major cities, so it's definitely a major oversight, and not "Well, that's just how the thing works, and the sexism lies in the resources being use,d not in programming of Siri"
