commented on Neil deGrasse Tyson Is Made of Star Stuff, but His Books Are Black Holes
Sound science and compelling narrative are not mutually exclusive. For example, Changes in the Land by William Cronon is an absolute stellar example of how you can tell a great story and convey some amazing science. It's worth a read.
Tyson's books are books on science, not science books. They are written for laymen and as such should be judged on their artistic merits.

Witnesses called in a crime in progress. Gave descriptions of the people they witnessed fucking in the car. Cops show up and see two people matching that description. That is plenty probably cause to detain them for questioning and asking for identification all over the fucking world. Even the Netherlands.
Christ. Harping on shit like this doesn't help anything.

This is terrible. I ride a 36 year old motorcycle in Seattle virtually every day year round. I ride fast and I'm pretty aggressive. Having said that I'd say the average bicyclist has more balls than I do. It does seem just so damn dangerous. I don't know that I'll ever be a bicycle commuter but I'd like everyone to at least have that as a safe option.

Jim, that's just assinine. Are a teenager? There are plenty of bad whiskeys. Most whiskeys are bad whiskeys. Sure, there's a personal taste and so a great degree of subjectivity but anyone with any amount of experience drinking whisky or whiskey does begin to develop a palate.
When it comes to scotch and irish whiskeys I'll take any blind taste test and tell you what it is and in most cases who made it. There are lots of single malts I've never tried, but I'll be able to tell you if it's quality or it it's shit.
But you're buying.

commented on The Type of Police Reform I Want to See
My Dad was a NYC cop. I tend to come down on the side of cops in many situations when others find the behaviour of cops deplorable. I'm confident that I'm usually right.
Having said the above (for some reason I'm not entirely sure of; burnish my bona-fides maybe?) this sounds like a nice narrative that is short on specifics. What authority does the newly created Compliance and Professional Standards Bureau actually have? Didn't a citizen observer acting in an official capacity just get escorted out of a crime scene recently? How does that jive? What, exactly, is their "important role" and how will it have the weight needed to be effective and how will it be kept from being a rubber stamp for a SPOG agenda?
And how did your admininstration come to make the decisions it made in that last round of very strange disciplinary back steps?
I guess I could go on but while it strikes a reasonable tone I can't help but feel the final product will be shit.
As a tangental side note, while my dad was virtually always required to be armed my brothers and I never, even once, ever saw his gun. He hated them.

commented on Johnny Clegg and the Story of My Great Shame
i once claimed to have written and recorded the guitar tracks to Communications Breakdown which was playing on the rekkid player at the time. I was a partly and said it while talking to a girl nearly 30 years ago. I meant it ironically; a wise ass over the top remark of deluded grandeur as a joke/obvious lie. Turns out that while she looked American, sounded American, even acted American, she was, in fact, raised by her parent missionaries in French speaking Africa and had never even heard of Led Zeppelin. Or the Brady Bunch. Or Mr. Bubbles or Gignator, or "Ancient Chinese Secret" or any other cultural reference. By the time I realized she actually believed me it was too late. I was too far in with my charade. Way too deep to back out gracefully. So I doubled down and claimed to have written the screen play for Liquid Sky. And was working on my novel.
For some reason I'll just be sitting there minding my own business when all the sudden this whole thing just pops right into my head making me realize I'm just a bunch smoke be blown up someone's ass.

commented on Is Everyone Sick All the Time This Winter, Or Is It Just Me?
I work at a large city facility. There are several dozen employees on and off site with union jobs, health benefits and paid sick time. Most have been here well over 10 years with some pushing 40.
For the first time in recent memory not a single person called in sick this past Monday.
I’m not sure what it infer from that other than we have been awfully lucky or the cold and flu season just ain’t that bad.
