Mrs Jarvie has pending quests in West End. And why can't I take a nap in public? I get tired damn it!

Thank you Charles for an excellent example of living in the world as it is, and not the world people pretend to have. We need more of this kind of thinking across a range of subjects if America is going to be anything more than a third world garbage dump in 100 years' time.

I now live in Australia, where gun control was made a reality after the Port Arthur massacre in 1986 (35 dead, 23 injured).

That was 26 years ago, and since then Australia has had ONE mass shooting, in 2002, when 2 were killed and 5 were injured.

from Wikipedia:

The federal government coordinated with all states and territories of Australia to ban and heavily restrict the legal ownership and use of self-loading rifles, self-loading and pump-action shotguns, and heavily tightened controls on their legal use. The government initiated a "buy-back" scheme with the owners paid according to a table of valuations. Some 643,000 firearms were handed in at a cost of $350 million which was funded by a temporary increase in the Medicare levy which raised $500 million.

re: Taxes. Let's tax different things! Instead of taxing sales and employment, let's tax natural resource extraction (the harder to replace, the higher the tax), pollution (the harder to clean up, the higher the tax), and financial derivatives (those funny-money IOUs that the super rich like to buy when they should be investing their money into creating jobs).

This is not my idea, and you should read the book by Puget Sound-native John Michael Greer where he lays it all out for us. The Wealth Of Nature, New Society Publishers 2011.

I wonder what the Mexican mafias this of this? I hope this is a solid step towards freeing the Mexican people of the nightmare drug war that has gone on for far too long.

That's exactly what I thought as I climbed Mauna Loa. The vegetation grows smaller and more sparse until no plants can be seen - just an endless sea of red rock for hours on accent. Coming back down, the first plant spotted is a joy to behold, and the jungle forest the car was parked in seemed from another reality.
