@ Seattleblues. Distant ancestors? Up to the 1950's native children in this country were kidnapped from their parents and sent to Catholic boarding schools (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story…). This is not an issue of the 1500's it is an issue of the last 50 years. This is not ancient history, the wrongs committed against native peoples is recent and deserves redress.

Thanks for keeping on this Mr. Kiley. After this year, it will become nigh impossible keep funding for 4 Culture. It is do or die so to speak...

The 2/3 majority only applies to tax increases. Tax cuts can be passed with a simple majority...
2nd the cognitive dissonance comment...

WA State would be the first state in the union NOT to have an arts commission. This would put us behind Mississippi culturally.

@ 23

They cost the government money just like expenditures do. I don't get tax breaks, neither do the vast majority of business in the state. Tax breaks for industry basically works, for all intents and purposes, the same way as subsidies at tax payers expense. Both help prop up a vital part of the economy.

@18

The state does, however give major tax cuts to certain software companies.

#5 and #8

The tunnel and the 520 projects are coming out of a different budget than the one being cut. As much as it sucks state government simply doesn't work that way. You would need a state constitutional amendment, I believe, to be able to transfer the money (which isn't going to happen with the current legislature).

Any new taxes (income tax or a theoretic tax on pot even) have to pass a vote from the public or a 2/3 majority in the state legislature. Both seem unlikely given the current .

@ DevilYouKnow

Argh! I knew there must be a reason. Still depressing though how children, the disabled, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations will be hurt by this and a big frickin tunnel gets the green light.

Enjoy driving folks because our highway system will be the only healthy thing left in this state in five or six years...

@ MFAChristine

Agreed and well put.

We would be one of only a few states without an arts commission. A dubious distinction.

That and the matching federal NEA monies would be sent to places like Idaho instead. Ugh...

Washington state without the arts would be Idaho with a coastline.

Interesting to see the 520 and viaduct replacements survived unscathed...
