Savage Love.
@39 I've had multiple gynecologists tell me that there is no additional health risk to taking Seasonale or other OCPs continuously. Women who have endometriosis have been doing so for years, and so far there haven't been reports of additional side effects or health risks. The reason pill packs were designed to include breaks for periods was not for health reasons. It was found that women were more comfortable still getting a period, and it's proof that there was not an accidental pregnancy. The 3 month breaks in Seasonale/Seasonique (the newer version) are just as artificial as the standard 28 day breaks. Seasonale is the same chemically as an estrogen-based 28 day pill, in 3 month packs. Seasonique-lo is comparable to the "low dose" estrogen-based 28 day OCPs. There has been no difference found health-wise in getting 12, 4, 2, 1, or 0 pill-related periods per year.

The Economist Condemns Seattle For Failing to Wage War On Cars.
I like driving and I like riding my bike. As a driver, I view cyclists as people who are helping to reduce traffic and pollution, so I want more bike lanes and other features that make it easier and safer to ride a bike. Even if I never rode a bike, I'm pro-bicycle because more cyclists = less traffic congestion.
As a cyclist, I prefer lanes that have a physical divide from cars. I would feel safer and ride my bike more if there were better bike lanes. Bike trails are nice for recreation but rarely are they decent routes for commuting.
Overall, bike-friendly features help drivers and cyclists alike, by reducing traffic, pollution, parking demand, and increasing safety. More cyclists also means less demand for gas, which means potentially lower prices for gas.

. ? Or . ?.
For work, I use APA style, which in the 5th edition recommended one space. I switched to one space- it seemed to make sense given the differences between computers and typewriters. Now the 6th edition APA Pub Manual comes out and recommends two spaces in manuscript drafts. So now I try to use two, but I thought it was odd that they went back to two spaces. To all the one-spacers: I agree with you but APA doesn't, so now I'm supposed to keep track of how many spaces I use depending on the context in which I'm writing. WTF!

What's the Difference?.
I agree with this idea. Administrators and teachers are already required to report any suspicion of physical or sexual abuse of children. If the abuse happens at school, between students, how does it not count? If the students who are attacked and beat up were treated like that at home, Social Services and the police would be all over it, or reports would be filed at the minimum. But send the kids to school, and somehow the definition of physical abuse no longer applies.

Who Killed Tyler Clementi?.
I think one big difference between the Clementi and the other guy in the video is that no one knew (or knows, except the other guy) who the other guy was. The roommate doing the filming and broadcasting made it very clear who Clementi was. Clementi was identified and clearly the one being targeted.
I agree with the call for looking at the whole situation: Clementi didn't complete suicide in a vacuum. Suicide is complicated, and other contributing factors are likely.
However, Clementi probably would not have completed suicide as he did if his roommates had not targeted him the way they did. When a crime is committed, the perpetrator is responsible for whatever harm they bring to the victim through the perpetrator's illegal/culpable action. If a perp assaults someone and the victim dies, it's murder (maybe manslaughter depending on the circumstances) even if the perp didn't set out to kill the victim. The perp caused the death of the victim. Culpability is not generally significantly reduced (maybe from murder to manslaughter in some cases) when some victims have preexisting vulnerabilities or ailments that may have made the victim more likely to die than others from equivalent assaults.

Second you on that. What outcome did the bullies expect?

Overkiller Queen.
I'm a little slow on trends or miss them completely, so I was initially indifferent to Lady Gaga. But I found her music very enjoyable, and her videos have plots and great dancing. Lady Gaga is foremost an entertainer in every sense of the word. She actually reminds me of MJ- without the lifelong tragedies- because with all of MJ's music and dancing, which he could have taken to more "serious" venues, he knew what audiences love, gave it to them, and loved it. She offers the kind of entertainment that many people love. And for people who love to hate, she serves as an outlet for that, too.
It's unlikely she will end up like Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan etc... She really hasn't produced any major scandals over risky behavior. Maybe becoming famous in her 20s helped her avoid the whole teen star thing. Whether or not you like her persona or music, she seems to be one of the smartest pop stars around.

"A witness stand is a lonely place to lie.".
This is going to be preaching to the choir, but it just really bugs me when Perkins and others say there is either no evidence about lesbians and gay men as parents, or that the evidence says they are likely to cause harm. Tons of studies from the past couple decades refute both claims:
http://apa.org/pi/lgbt/resources/policy/…. There have been press releases, blogs, and newspaper articles whenever something like the recent study in Pediatrics about lesbian mothers comes out.
Addressing all that research is just too much work! It's easier to rely on "we aren't bigots, we just want to think of the children." I get that: it's hard work preventing "one of the basic structures in society" from forming. You have to keep on it from birth to death: making it as hard as possible for gay families to have kids, kicking their children out of Catholic school, canceling prom and then making up a fake one, and hassling older couples when they go to the hospital. No wonder there has been no time to read about the empirical data.
