Nov 14, 2013 downbythefreeway commented on Where Should I Buy a New Mattress?.
came in here to blow your mind with THE BEST/CHEAPEST MATTRESS EVAR but several people have beaten me to the punch - Amazon has a queen size memory foam mattress that are delivered rolled up in a heavy-ass tube. for $285. it's an insane deal. one person upthread said they find memory foam to be uncomfortable, so maybe try sitting on one in a store first, but I love it, my partner loves it, everyone who has ever sat on it loves it. I was afraid it would just be like a super duper big mattress pad, but no - it's a full on mattress, really heavy and thick. I have had Ikea mattresses, Sears mattresses, and this is by far the most comfortable mattress I have ever been anywhere near. I come home from vacation longing for my mattress. and it only cost $285 with shipping. DO IT.…

p.s. I know...Amazon. I try not to buy from them when I have viable local alternatives. but when it's a $700 price difference between an awesome product and a low-end product, I gotta do what's right for me.

that is ABSOLUTELY his best work. I love me some Potter, but he doesn't really perform in those movies. that Extras clip is the reason I am a fan.

This thread is ridiculous. Fine, I'll deal with your straw man argument: no one here is suggesting that a law be passed preventing businesses from firing people for performance issues. The story merely asks us whether the actions of this company - paying their employee so little and providing such unpredictable hours that he has to live on food stamps and go hungry on shift because he can't afford the food they sell and they don't provide a shift meal - are moral. Is this a business we want to support? Do they treat their workers fairly? These are reasonable questions to ask.

Give me a break. I read all the same feminist blogs you do, and think about the issues you raise all the time. The tips you posted here were obviously written with awareness of those issues (rape culture, culture of fear, etc) and I think they succeed in using non-gendered language. Of course the primary conversation should be about how to stop rapists from raping - and you know SPD is trying to catch the rapist, right? - but it is counterproductive to shut down the conversation any time someone tries, even respectfully and with full awareness of the underlying social issues, to suggest ways for people to stay saferish on the street. If the tips hadn't been written in such a way that suggests the author thought through these issues carefully, I'd be right there with you. But they were, and your reaction makes us feminists look bad. Which we don't really need. Be more thoughtful next time; this stuff is important.

Obviously his criticisms were over the top (which is why you chose his among all the messages I imagine you must have received) but I totally agree that the cover was in very poor taste. Why? Why was it more important to make a joke than to celebrate? Why was it so important to make a joke that you knew perfectly well would offend some people during a really emotional, important time? It seemed trollish to me as soon as I saw the photo shoot post on Slog the other day. You're a private publication, you can do what you want, but this choice did make me lost respect for you guys as people and as journalists.

Srsly, I agree with pretty much all of Roger's basic values, but he is just about the worst spokesman our movement could ask for. Dude, everything you write makes me cringe. People publish you because your particular brand of hyper-aggressive density shock jockism drives comments and clicks, but if you think you're helping - you're not. Shut up, please.
Mar 7, 2012 downbythefreeway commented on Pot Activists vs. Pot Activists.
The really sad thing is, I'm sure most of the people posting nonsense about DUIs etc in this thread actually believe what they're saying. Because for the last several months, their medical providers (pot docs and dispensary operators) have been using their position as a medical authority to brainwash patients into advocating and voting against their own best interests. I've stopped shopping (yes, it's shopping) at several of my favorite dispensaries for this reason. Plus, the paranoia and knee-jerk distrust of authority just kind of comes with the pot smoking crowd (you know it's true) so this story about cops and the "mainstream" ACLU conspiring to crack down on patients appeals to them immediately.

The people driving this thing know it's BS, and are motivated by profit, but many of the people we're wasting our time arguing with in this thread don't know any better - they just trust the people profiting from them to tell them the truth.
