That article was so heartbreaking. It once again reminds me of how fortunate I am that my conservative evangelical parents didn't pull that kind of stunt but have tried their best to understand.

What got me was when I figured out that none of the adults that had spent all that time lecturing us about waiting had actually waited themselves. They never told us that, of course, just about how beautiful and wonderful waiting was. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized that I can't think of any of those people for whom it wasn't just a talking point that they hadn't followed when they were teenagers. It's dishonest.

And, of course, since they also taught that gay was totally a choice, it never occurred to me as a teenager that there was another reason than being uber spiritual why those pledges were so easy for me.

I'm confused, I thought he already was out.

Admittedly, he does ping the gaydar, but on the other hand, a lot of homeschooled straight boys I know come across as slightly effeminate, so who knows.

GCN does not believe that gay people are supposed to be committed to lifelong celibacy. Officially, they don't take a position one way or the other because they're trying to be a safe space for people who are coming to terms with their sexuality and would be scared off otherwise, but the director and the vast majority of members believe that gay relationships are exactly equivalent, morally, to straight relationships.

If a decade ago my little conservative Christian college in rural Georgia could handle guys wearing skirts, this school seriously needs to get over it.

What gets me is that I've spent the last seven years defending my team's fan base from accusations that we weren't real fans because we didn't riot when the team won the Cup in '04, yet suddenly when Vancouver embarrasses themselves on the world stage we're supposed to believe it was just anarchists because real hockey fans would never destroy their city.

I grew up around Concerned Women for America and AFA types (actually still share mutual facebook friends with the president of CWfA), and for all of their worry about the children, I didn't learn about any of the stuff they're worried about from TV, I learned it from *them*.

I'm pretty sure it's not normal for a young teenage girl growing up in the pre-internet early '90s to know about fisting or watersports or scat play or really any sort of kink, but I did, because *they* wouldn't stop talking about it. In great detail. A lot. Never mind that there were kids in the room while they were rambling on about all the horrible things they thought were going to pollute children's minds.

To say it was bizarre is an understatement.

I don't think there are any photos of me that hint at anything, unless you count the one of me at about 18 months old, sitting in a tree wearing a frilly dress, with cast on my arm because I'd fallen off of a swing set a few weeks before. That's still me, girly exterior but totally a tomboy under the surface.

I grew up around AFA types and there was nothing that I heard come out of Bahati's mouth that I hadn't heard hundreds of times growing up. There's a reason he thinks that he's not extreme and seems sincerely surprised at the outrage, and that's because American groups have gotten away with using that rhetoric for decades and still are given a seat at the table and treated as legitimate voices in the discussion.
