This company sounds awful, but the one day notice doesn't surprise me at all. Most people I know who have been laid off (in various positions and industries) were given no notice all all. it was just, "Sorry, we liked having you here, but budget cuts blah blah blah." Notice would be great, and I wish it were standard, but I've never heard of it for layoffs. Store closings, yes, but not layoffs.

I'm totally jealous! My plants don't have ANY fruit yet. Most of them have flowers though, so there should be fruit soon.

I planted my tomatoes a bit late, and they haven't started putting out fruit yet, but they've grown a LOT recently and they have flowers. Some of them are still kind of runty, but I think that has more to do with location than anything else.
My potatoes are going insane. I'm growing them in buckets, and they've just exploded. I can't wait to harvest them.
I started my peppers from seed, and sadly, none of them really took when I transplanted them. I ended up getting a bunch of starts from the garden store. Oh well.
My carrots and onions are doing well, as are my beets. I'm also growing shelling beans for the first time ever this year, and except for a small slug attack (which I quickly got under control) they are doing great. I'm also growing blueberries for the first time, and those haven't grown much, but they're alive and healthy. Maybe next year. Oh, and this is my first year for melons too. They were slow to get started, but now that it's warmed up they're growing more.
All in all I'm really excited for this season!

I just bought a lobe of foie gras from Hudson Valley Foie Gras. Their ducks are cage free and have plenty of clean space, are well cared for, and the gavage is brief. The esophagus of a duck is a lot different from ours - it doesn't hurt them, and in fact they naturally hold things in their throats in the wild. As others have pointed out, there are other, more popular animals that are treated much worse, but foie gras ducks are a popular target.
Here is a very good article about Hudson Valley. http://www.villagevoice.com/2009-02-18/n…
Also, as others have pointed out, sear that foie gras up! It's truly fantastic. Quinn's Pub does it rather well.
