commented on Goodbye, 60-Watt Lightbulb
Last week my landlord and Seattle City Light replaced my incandescent bulbs. The result was a harsh, glaring light that was bright enough to light a sports arena. I immediately switched back the incandescent bulbs.
Now I know to stock up on the old bulbs. I'll think of Fluffy every time I flip the switch.

I had no idea that Slog had a writer named Ansel Herz.
The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park - Seattle Unit (the other unit is a vast wilderness near Skagway, AK) is an interesting and free museum that should be visited immediately by all Slog readers.

commented on Hugely Stupid Op-Ed in Today's NYT
I read the NYT piece. And while I'm not sure I agree with the author, I would call his op-ed anything but stupid.
Savage cites novelist John Weir to rebut.
Weir says that the NYT author thinks "vodka boycotters have no goal but to ruin a vodka company, in a kind of tantrum of gay consumer annoyance". Uh, no. The author never says anything like that. He calls the boycott "an understandable response".
Weir berates the op-ed's claim that Stoli is not a Russian company (in the same sentence Weir refers to Stoli as a "multi-national corporation"). The NYT piece says that Stoli is a Latvian company owned by a corporate group in Luxembourg called SPI. It further states that SPI is run by two (ex) Russians who were forced to flee the country "to avoid exile or imprisonment" by Putin.
Dan, are these assertions misleading or outright false? If so, please feel free to make a counter argument instead of calling the author "hugely stupid".

commented on Julian Assange on the Bradley Manning Verdict
Due to Manning's disclosures, the public gained extensive knowledge about how our government actually operates. This cannot be tolerated. "Transparency in government" is a charming but outdated 20th Century concept. No worries though; the government knows what is best for us.
