commented on SL Letter of the Day: Show This Woman Some Love
I am so sorry that you have suffered such devastating rejection from your family and I am glad to know that in the years since your graduation, you have built a new life and new family for yourself with loving and supportive friends.
The recent contact with your family is the re-opening of an old and deep wound that reminds you what was lost ten years ago. It hurts - and you are not a weak or broken person by acknowledging that pain. Everything you have done since that graduation day has shown you have a great inner strength.
It is okay to mourn your loss again, but please recognize this newest act of rejection has given you a small part of your family back - someone you last saw as a five-year old boy. The act of facing your hateful family again and giving a safe space to your nephew is another beautiful act of courage and grace. The pain you feel now is a mere stumble on a long and powerful journey you started 10 years ago. You will get UP, you will feel STRONG again and you will go FORWARD, because that is what you did BEFORE and it is WHO YOU ARE. Never forget it.
I wish you all the best and I hope you keep in touch with Dan so he can let us all know how you and your nephew are doing.

commented on Will Everyone Please Stop Beeking Out?!
I've actually noticed more bees in my flower garden this year than previous years. I live in the middle of the city so I'm not sure where they come from - what's a bee's range anyway?
Perhaps all the bees are moving here to Canada for the health care.

@29 - not really an equivalent comparison considering the population of Dodge City was only 996 people in 1880. That would be an annual rate of 1.5 murders (per 1K). If you extrapolate the murder rate to be consistent with population then Dodge City of the 1880's would have had the astounding rate of 150 murders (per 100K).
Flip it around and West Virginia has 0.035 murders (per 1K) and Mississippi 0.071 murders (per 1K) based on your figures.

commented on Christians Protesting At Pride
My cockles were warmed by this post. Not all Christians can be painted with the same brush. I suppose I have been fortunate to have been raised in the United Church (Canada's liberal denomination) and have had mostly positive experiences with self-identified Christians (some of whom are also gay). My sister in-law is an Anglican minister and is very progressive (in support of gay marriage etc.), but even in her organization there are conservative tides to push against. It is encouraging to hear the progressive Christian voice speak out above all of the blind rhetoric that spews from the Christian right for once. It almost makes one forget about the batshit crazy nutbars from Westboro....almost....
Baby steps, my friends.
