I remember thinking when I first read this letter that the coworker could be incontinent and wear Depends because he actually needs them. Even if he's young, he could still have medical problems.

Of course, the fetish thing is totally possible, too. Either way, say nothing unless he poops on your chair.

I think we're just quibbling over terms. If you define sexual orientation as "what gender you prefer to date/bone/whatever," then polyamory isn't a sexual orientation. If you define sexual orientation as "what characteristics you innately prefer in your sexual relationships," then polyamory is a sexual orientation. Either way, poly people deserve the same legal and societal respect that mono people get.

Dan, they do this in the United States, too. You can't have your legal gender changed in many states until you've had some kind of surgery (top or bottom). For people who don't want surgery or can't afford it, the government basically says, well, too bad.

@112: Right, it's still medically accurate and still used in diagnoses, but it's slowly being replaced. The Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities in NYC has been renamed the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities, for example.

I think the reason for the switch is that "intellectual disability" or "developmental disability" could describe someone with, say, severe autism but with normal or above-average IQ. That person would still be intellectually disabled (and may not even be able to work or live independently) but not mentally retarded.

I like this.

@84: Yep. The term's been replaced by "intersex." It happened not too long ago, so some people still use the old word. A nice person should just correct you in a no-big-deal way. It's kind of like the word "retarded." I work with intellectually disabled people and the word is considered highly insulting in my field, but it's still widely used in the larger community and in medical documentation.

I'm trans and the letter writer seems open-minded and willing to learn stuff. The transguy was a dick, no doubt.

This, I think, is why queers love Daffyd Thomas from Little Britain. (If you haven't seen LB, you should.) Everyone in our community knows at least one newly-out queer who loves to harp on the persecution thing and jumps at every minor slight. It's a lot funnier when it happens on television, though.

I agree with RKBK -- that paragraph was ignorant and racist. "One of dem days?" Meeting with his parole officer? Gang? Does The Stranger have no other image of black people? I don't care if the writer was African -- he's clearly got a weird view of black Americans.

"Fraternal Correction" needs to be the name of a porno.

@20: Good point. Protesters shouldn't go out of their way to piss off anyone but the people they're protesting. It's a good way to turn people against you who would've otherwise been out there holding signs with you.
