Hospital In Missouri Facing the Mother of All Lawsuits.
@johnjeeves - Exactly.
Doesn't the Obama memorandum have to be complied with? Or it is discretionary? I have a feeling no one wants to cut funding to this institution for one case, even if it is a clear violation. Which would make such a directive pointless in the first place.

Thatcher's Death: Two Questions.
Thatcher was never frightened by her opponents when she was alive. She made short work of their misogyny and insults and won the argument each time. That said, Section 28 was a shameful blight on her legacy and should never have been enacted. But she still saved Britain and will be remembered long after any of us have died. RIP.

SL Letter of the Day: Anti-Gay Haters Are Doing Us a Favor.
When I read the hateful comments in threads at National Review's Corner or the Daily Telegraph, I don't get depressed. I feel great! Typically it's only a few guys, probably older, who are obsessed with homosexuality and say all the standard nasty things, with an air of pedantic superiority. But they are digging a hole for themselves and seeing them revealed shows how pathetic they are. (We all know most of these guys are closet cases. Why else be so obsessed?)

Teachers Are "Parasites" and "Terrorists".
You can oppose generous public-sector compensation and benefit packages, support the limiting of union powers (including automatic dues deduction) and want more competition in schools ... and not be in favor of gunning down children or think that teachers are bad people who can't do the right thing.
Seriously, this Manichean bullshit -- us vs. them, angels vs. devils -- has got to END on both sides, left and right. ENOUGH. Red State. Daily Kos. Powerline. Balloon Juice. Ugh.

18,000 Working People to Lose Their Jobs.
How do you step in and save this business? You can't force it to stay open. I suppose you could try to seize it and nationalize it, but I don't think you can do that in the USA (yet). Anyway, labor can go on strike, but so can capital.
Also, not that "Hostess's current private equity owner, Ripplewood Holdings, is unlikely to recover anything in the liquidation."

Anti-Gay Now, Anti-Gay Tomorrow, Anti-Gay Forever!.
This is what I love about all this. The anti-gay GOP base is simultaneously 1) opposed to gay civil rights and 2) irate that we aren't focusing on "real" issues, wasting our time on the silly homosexuals. So how ironic would it be if the GOP embraced gay marriage and forced the haters to live, breathe and sleep the GAY 24/7? It would be like living in the American Horror Story asylum with "Dominique" playing on a loop.
