commented on The Stranger Endorses McGinn for Mayor
If Conlin is so bad how did he get an 'exceptional' rating from the Municipal League? Conlin is endorsed by the Washington Conservation Voters and TREEpac, while neither of his opponents lists ANY enviro endorsements. How are those two greener than Conlin?

The biggest problem I have with micro-units is that they are a stark admission that more and more people are not being paid enough to join the middle class. We have to provide ultra-cheap housing for all those retail, restaurant, and other minimum wage workers.

commented on The Stranger Election Control Board’s Endorsements For the November 6, 2012, General Election
As new representatives Gerry Pollet and Sarajane Siegfriedt will bring loads of energy and push to our progressive ideals, and they will do the best job precisely because they are a little older than their opponents. They have spent the past few decades working on these issues and learning the ropes. Their proven track record is available for all to see. Between them they must have 50 years of experience.

commented on Charter Schools Backers Spend Big on Sylvester Cann
C'mon Girlfriend: If you think Gerry is only concerned "with pet issues" you haven't been paying attention. Gerry has been working hard and volunteering to improve PUBLIC schools and universities for well over a decade now. That's what age and experience can get you: someone who has a solid reputation, knowledge, and understanding. Gerry knows why charter schools are a bad idea.
LJM: You're pretty funny! Is it possible you are unaware that the main argument for charter schools is that students of public schools perform poorly on standardized tests and therefore should have more choices; and now the charter schools, who get to cherry-pick their students, are performing no better on these same tests?
Scott White was a great senator in many ways, but he also did some unglamorous horse-trading, and this is where Gerry's opponent got his political education.

commented on Endorsements for the August 7 Primary Election
It's less about rewarding than supporting people we have come to know and respect. Being active in the party hasn't been an automatic ticket to endorsement.
In the case of Sarajane and Gerry, no one can dispute that they have been hard at work in the community as well.

commented on After Long Court Battle, Ingraham High School Trees Finally Come Down Today
Let's not forget that there is a lot of space around Ingraham High School. They could have expanded it in a different direction, and they chose to fight in court instead.
While trees of this size are not unusual in Seattle, a grove of this size, with trees this old, is rare.
FWIW, there has been enough public concern shown for this grove that at one point there were at least four TV station cameras filming at once during the tree cutting.
