Well, if you're serious, @5, you might look up some of the events they're attending, to see how much they cost. If you did, you might find out that, say, day tickets to 'Mo-Wave run for less than $20 a pop, or that the most expensive entree at Chico Madrid is $15 (sangria by the pitcher is $6.50), or that the busiest proposed itinerary (Schmader's) pencils in at less than $60 for three days. I appreciate that it's more than you might desire (or be able) to spend yourself, but its not exactly extravagant, either.

All right, I admit I was pulling your leg a bit with Johnny Rivers, but my point, such as it is, was that American radio in 1966 was full of powerful music like this , including a fair amount by The Animals ("Don't Let Me Down"-pretty heavy, in my book, at least-charted that year, and went quite a bit higher than "Inside..."); and of course you can be sure it got some airplay over here: as I obliquely noted, this performance was taken from the Sullivan show. And yeah, you're right, there were certainly some American boys going over this record with a fine-toothed comb-Mark Farner, for one (and there's more than a bit of Eric Burdon in Jim Morrison, too, don't you think?) Anyway, who am I to talk; my favorite Animals single is "San Franciscan Nights", goofy voiceover and all.

Well, it may have been too cool for U.S. radio (it topped the Billboard charts at #34, though, so someone must've been playing it) but it wasn't too much for Ed Sullivan to handle, I guess...and, frankly, is Eric Burdon all that much rawer than Levi Stubbs, or Sam & Dave, or Wilson Pickett...or Johnny Rivers, for that matter?

The China Daily is a PRC state-owned enterprise, like its rival, The Global Times. Careful reading of news stories about China in other papers will often turn up one or the other as a source.

It certainly wasn't their best album, but Whomp That Sucker has my favorite Sparks lyric line (from "Tips For Teens"):

"Do I look so knowing, old, and wise;
Maybe it's those dacron ties..."
