Bear in mind that the biggest costs are capital - putting the lines and wires in the ground - and the biggest operating costs are customer-acquisition, read marketing.

@96 I wasn't aware that Mrs. LOST's desire for marriage was an emotional need. LOST barely mentions Mrs. LOST in his note - I'm afraid that the woeful tale of unfilled emotional needs, spousal neglect, and oddly retrograde notions about what does and doesn't turn on women (but not men, because, of course, men aren't human beings) comes from you.

Seriously. If you want to walk a mile in someone's shoes, try LOST's. He's been with Mrs. LOST for his entire adult life. He loves her, wants her. But he is no longer having regular sex with Mrs. LOST. Mrs. LOST reveals that sex with him - at least some of the time - makes her uncomfortable. And LOST is confused, rejected, upset, probably a little humiliated by the fact that he has married this woman who may not actually feel the same way about him as he does about her.

What we forget, up here in the cheap seats, is that we can play advice columnist because the stakes are so low. It's easy to pronounce harsh judgement and make outrageous assumptions when you have no skin in the game, no name to protect or reputation to build. It's easy to be right all the time if nobody cares whether you are or not.

@121

Hi it pretty well here. Bitterness runs rampant here, and I wouldn't be surprised if ICHTT's attitude leaked out in public. Her friends are also sort of missing the point, too; it isn't just attitude that makes a woman attractive, but a craptastic attitude can make any woman unattractive.

What I can't see from this is what makes ICHTT different from a thousand other women I've met. With apologies to Rosser Reeves, she doesn't have much of a unique dating proposition. Hot qualifies, and rich and powerful - yup, those work. But being super-smart can also work. Socially adept works. Doing cool stuff works. Bantering like Nora Charles works.

Personally, I'm at the 30th percentile of physical attractiveness, at best. But I did OK when I was single. I understand what I can do, or what I am, that's special, and what isn't. I also have two legs, and I can use them to walk away from someone who's not interested. ICHTT should try it some time.

@117 substitute the girlfriend with a cigarette or a crack pipe or a bottle of vodka

That's exactly it. Exactly.

It's not how much he wants it, or how often they do it, or how they do it. It's whether this desire or drive is compulsive/can't be stopped for a significant period of time AND has negative social, physical, and/or professional consequences, AND takes place over an extended period of time.

Based on this, well, he's not quite there yet. He could be, of course, without an understanding and very GGG girlfriend. It's sort of like high-functioning drug addicts; so long as they have the discretionary cash to afford their drug intake, and sufficient free time to indulge, many if not most have a normal life with no major personal conflict.

When they run out, of course, things go downhill very, very fast. And with another, less understanding girlfriend, or without a stable relationship, things could go downhill for the LW's husband, too.

@139 Jesus, are you ever right about that. I spoke dutch to my grandmother when I was young, so I should have had a little bit of a head start, but get a job in Amsterdam and I can't even get the sounds right. She probably laughed at me every day for the first month.

Neat little digression on french grammar. My wife asked me about apprendre a while ago, and I had some trouble explaining it. Despite having spoken the language all my life. Or perhaps because I've spoken the language all my life, I've never really thought about it.

I have to agree - 100% - with Magnolia Heron; the whole story isn't quite there. People - even douches - don't go off the haircut alone. They look at the whole package. They draw conclusions based off that, and they might be wrong, but snap judgments based on imperfect information are the way humans work. It's not bigotry; it's humanity.

SGWCC's really hitting on two problems here. One, there are douches in DC. That should surprise nobody. Not the most (although hardly the least) cosmopolitan city in the world, and one with more unattached women than men, which can seriously screw with the culture.

Two, she's not getting hit on a lot, or propositioned, or has her flirting responded to. She also knows the problem. She can dress however she pleases, and she shouldn't suffer the presence of idiots as a result. Screw them.

On the other hand, she has control over how she packages herself and makes her impression, and that's the thing: if her "look" only appeals to a small number of men, and she knows it, then she can't complain if she doesn't get propositioned a lot. Dan hits on this point a lot: tastes are the way they are. If your desired kink or type or fetish rules out 90% of your dating pool, or if your personal type or kink or fetish causes 90% of the dating pool to rule themselves out, then that's the way things are. Drop the righteous indignation. You knew how it was going to play out.

@92 More common than you think, amigo, and it goes for both genders, too. Something about being young, stupid, and in your first serious adult relationship, and desperately wanting to not screw it up.

@ too many to count.

One thing that hasn't been touched on yet (no pun intended) - the extended period of pre-penetration activities is a fairly long period of time where things can go south, ending the session early. I'd be interested in how many times CAIF has his take off aborted, so to speak.

Also, am I the only one to note that the foreplay as described is one-sided, and that she's taken mutual masturbation, blowjobs, and handjobs off the table? To me, that screams out that she's not interested in him. She's not totally repulsed by him, but she's not interested enough to take an active role. That would mean acknowledging his presence and his needs, and investing time and effort in his pleasure and happiness.

@71 - Seandr, you're a cynical son of a bitch. Which isn't to say that you're wrong, not hardly.

Revising language is a fool's game. The moving target for, ahem, feeble-mindedness, reads like the book of Genesis - moron begat idiot, begat retarded, begat mentally challenged, begat intellectually disabled, begat developmentally delayed.

As for an alternate word for the female genitals, why not go to the classics: "la figa", Italian for "the fig". And il dottore has it on his leathers - which have no doubt seen enough of la figa themselves.
