I wish Dan had advised TRUTH to tell his wife the truth. If it's crushing to her naïveté, that need not be a bad thing and is unlikely to break them up. For me the most sacred thing about marriage has nothing to do with sexual exclusivity but with the privilege of intimacy, getting to know, really know, one other human being, without veils or distortions or bullshit. Like most ideals, it may not be fully attainable, but it's worth striving toward. After eight years of marriage, I'd feel more loved to have my husband confess a lie he told when we met than to have him perpetuate it.

I'm surprised you couldn't find a more kink-aware physician yourself to respond to the sounding question. Dr King's experience sounds like it comes from E.R. reports only (seriously, you have a Stephen King talking about snakes in the urethra?) and he doesn't seem to have a clue about the great variety of sounds available for play. I've been sounding guys for years without a single problem. No responsible players I know would ever use a pencil or a drill bit for sounding. The best way to learn is one on one, but there are also instructional videos available.

This is the first time I've ever seen you quote an "expert" who seemed not only clueless about the kink under discussion but unapologetically opposed to it.

GREAT response on the "poly" question. It's not an identity, people. It's a preference. There's nothing wrong with it and you have every right to it, but It's something you have a taste for, like sherry or sardines. It may go away, it may not. Give the "Born This Way" arguments a rest. By the time you're old enough to want sexual love in relationship, there isn't much "natural" about how you've constructed what it should look like. Your psychological preparation and emotional needs are calling the shots, are always developing, and will continue to do so till the day you die.

Killer take-no-prisoners column, Dan, and it really, really all needed to be said. Thanks.
