@7: Only 4 justices are required to grant cert. SCOTUS can take this even if Scalia, Thomas, Alito, Roberts, and Kennedy don't want to.

@46: It's a private school. Only a governmental entity can violate someone's constitutional rights (unless you're trying to keep slaves--13th Amendment is the only one that applies to government and private citizens alike).

@28: Michael Sam has been publicly gay for years? I guess Michael Sam's dad didn't get that memo.…

Does anyone honest to God sit down and list out every single piece of personal property in his/her will? Why can't she just say "all of my personal property to [fiancee's name] except" and then list any other specific items she wants to go to others? Oh, right, because that would be way too sensible. And, most importantly, it wouldn't let her write a "look at me, look at me" letter to Dan.

It drives me absolutely, raging, batshit insane when people try to convince others that they can't possibly have it bad because somebody, somewhere on the planent has it worse. Yes, poor people in the United States generally earn more money than poor people in, say, Burundi. But that knowledge won't help feed the American poor person's kids. It won't help her get to work when her car breaks down and she doesn't have any money to fix it. It won't get her back on her feet when she has to file bankruptcy if she gets hurt and can't work and the medical bills are piling up. So why on Earth should it make her feel any better about her lot in life?

The New York Times interviewed Abigail Fisher around the time of the oral argument back in October. The only thing I remember about the article is that she said she would have been able to get a better job if she had gone to UT instead of LSU. Just that one sentence told me all I need to know about her. She's someone who sees absolutely nothing wrong with publicly and simultaneously slagging off both her school and her employer, and has an utter lack of anything resembling a sense of accountability. It's not HER fault she didn't get the job she wanted--it's all because of that mythical minority who took the spot at UT that she damn well deserved.

I bet 99% of those people are birthers. I wonder if they know Ted Cruz was born in Canada to a Cuban father and an American mother.

I wonder why CABAR's under the impression that Dan opened himself up to criminal liability by advising this person. The only possible crimes I could come up with that might arise out of giving someone advice are conspiracy and solicitation--both of which, in my jurisdiction at least, require the conspirator/solicitor to have intent that a felony be committed. CABAR's own link describes destruction of evidence as a misdemeanor, not a felony.

Even beyond that, though, all Dan did was give his opinion; it would be extremely difficult to prove that he actually intended for the caller to do anything at all. If CABAR actually is a lawyer, I hope to God he doesn't do criminal law.

@66: The man who died was my sophomore year math teacher. He and his wife were a dear, sweet couple who did a great deal for their community. I assure you that there are many, many people who feel worse about this than the selfish piece of shit who took their lives because he couldn't be bothered to call a cab.
