I like Colbert and think that the outrage over this particular joke managed to be a bit overblown, but it's a bit troubling that Dan didn't actually list any responses from people of Asian descent other than the originator of the hashtag. Yes, the first response is from a WOC (who seems to have a personal vendetta against Suey Park, but that's a separate story), but being a person of color is not the same as being an Asian person, and that's the specific community the joke mentions, not all people of color.

Like I said, I do like Colbert and think he's generally terrifically on target, but I don't think it's wrong to acknowledge that this joke was a poor one. Yes, he's making a larger point, but that doesn't necessarily mean Asian people have to deal with offense towards their community.

@84

You know, your comment is stupid enough, but referring to trans people as "it" is ridiculously insulting.

Besides, as has been stated earlier, news organizations call people by preferred names all the fucking time- Stefani Germanotta is always called Lady Gaga despite the fact that Gaga isn't her legal name. But suddenly when a trans person would like to be referenced with their preferred gender pronoun, the legal name becomes very important. Sorry, this has nothing to do with "NPR's duty as a news organization", this is pure transphobic bullshit.

Not only is the rampant trans-phobia in a lot of these comments disheartening (to say the least) but it's sad to see people here making light of prison rape as well. None of these things are funny, assholes.

Ugh, terrible. What really breaks me up about it in particular is how bullying had convinced this poor kid that he wasn't even acceptable to deal with- to me, that seems like nothing but pure religious hatred. Awful.

Except, legally, he was a child. And height aside, it's not like 17 is old age- that's still pretty damn young.

@ 15

Even if Martin was, as you say, a thug in training, that doesn't change the fact that a grown man shot an unarmed child. Trayvon Martin could have been a terrible person, but that doesn't change the fact that he was shot for no good reason.

I'd also love seeing a trans-inclusive version of ENDA- though I like the comment about the VRA as well.

I can't speak for France, as I've unfortunately never visited, but this past year I spent three months studying in a small town in Italy. I am awful with languages, especially since my courses were taught in English, but all the people I met there really loved it when I tried to speak Italian, even though it was generally not very good. So I would agree with the majority here that learning at least some basic French would be a smart idea.

Audra McDonald's mic drop was all I need in life.

@78

Cars are also used as a form of city transportation, and yet people driving them or riding in them still are required by law to wear seat belts. In both cases, the law requires everyone to take precautions to ensure a greater risk of survival if an accident occurs- so stop acting as if it's a ridiculous notion to have to wear a helmet and just wear it.
