Only in Seattle can I wander into a gentle battle over hawk vs. hocking mucus. I was curious, so here's one citation:

For the record, I vote for not placing that substance anywhere someone has to walk.

To add to Fruit of the Womb (great idea for a business, by the way) you would also find fabulous sewing skills from whomever makes custom made bikinis or the suits that fitness and bodybuilders use for their contests. My daughter (in another state and seriously not handy, sorry) is so good at it that when her three year old needs panties and they're too busy to run upstairs to get clothes (three year olds love nudity) she just whips out a custom pair on the spot. Those kinds of seamstresses also sew on some lovely textures of fabric. Good luck!

Thank you. This is a beautifully written piece. I, too am a happy atheist, but it's not been easy. When I was the target of my aggressive Christian friends in high school, I promised myself I would raise thinking, reasoning people if I got the chance to have kids. Good news - three beautiful young women and they all have good minds they use to make decisions, instead of following ancient dogma. They do get on me, though, for their lack of knowledge of bible stories. I just smile and tell them that Google (and the LOLCat Bible) are their friends. Keep up the good work - you sound like a great dad.

I channel my grandmother's kitchen high in the mountains of NW Colorado when I make my rhubarb cobbler. She fed a crowd - guests who were there for hunting and fishing as well as the wranglers and other staff. As soon as I was tall enough to see over the counter in her kitchen, I figured out that the best tasting stuff in that world was a bowl of her cobbler. She used a buttery crust made with creme instead of milk or water for the wet part of the dough. The rhubarb was fresh from her garden out on the hillside - brilliant red and only the new stalks. She thickened the fruit filling with a little bit of instant tapioca and cut the sour (if needed) with a little baking soda. Ambrosia.

Hang in there, pregnant person. The world is a peculiar place and some things just make fellow humans drop all inhibitions and crawl into your private bubble. (See casts, bandages, babies in front packs, mixed culture children with curly hair, new VW Beetles, etc.)

Some don't know any better, some are desperate to have a reason to talk to another person, and some are dorks.

You can gather a collection of responses and choose one to match your mood: Low growl with teeth gnashing for emphasis, whipping out a laminated card with some snappy comments - no speech needed, just point to one of them, or you can simply use the truth. "Thanks, but I'd rather not discuss this with you."

I also like a small suggestion box with a slot in the top (*great* possibilities for obscenities here) with a pack of Post-its and a pencil at the ready. Just hand it to them and make the insensitive nitwits put it in writing.

Stories like this always make me sad. I have to believe that most of the people who choose police work as a career are motived by a desire to improve society, protect their neighbors, or maintain order. There's something that happens, though, when there are several officers together. It's almost as if the territorial testosterone-ism magnifies and makes them unreasonable, cranky, prickly reactionaries.

Yes. I know their jobs can be dangerous and that they have to deal with situations where people treat them poorly. I get that. I just wish that when they reach that tipping point where they start to believe everyone but their immediate family should be treated like a criminal they'd find something else to do.

Citizens are not the enemy and cameras aren't weapons. Just stop it.

I offer no defense for the cloying nuzzling, since I was raised that that kind of behavior, in public, was not done. As for having the male give the order, whether it be for food or drink, it's partly generational and partly geographic. I watched my parents do it that way - Dad always ordered for Mom even if we were in a truck stop.

My man was raised in the deep south. He does the same thing. It's a politeness thing as well as a seriously old fashioned role definition thing. We're ancient, so you have my permission to ignore us, but that's our pattern.

And yes, he also happens to be my master. It floats our collective boat. =)

There are so many other options. Take $20 to the health aid at the nearest elementary school. She/he can turn it into clothing for a poor child - always known to the office people. Find a pet rescue organization and take them money. Who feeds the homeless in your community? Take money or buy soap or towels and take them by.

There's simply no reason to give funding to hate groups. I put my last coin in a red kettle when they "won" the court case allowing them to refuse to hire gays. Their Christ would be appalled.

I'm with you, Dan.

This is not a trivial issue. Religious intolerance is destroying my country and shredding what's left of democracy. Try being fired from a job because you're not the "right" kind of person (read: fundamentalist Christian supremicist) and you'll understand why I not only refuse to stand during GBA, but I refuse to spend a penny going to a game where the damned song is worshiped.

I understand the need to be polite to someone who drops by for a conversation, but not for the need to publish their words. This man is not newsworthy, he's nasty. This man is not a community leader, he's a cheerleader for hatred. This man is not even Christian by any definition I can see in their biblical writings. When will we be strong enough to simply ignore the hateful publicity whores among us? Sigh.
