"FUNGAL"? Seriously: "FUNGAL"?!

Thanks for that. She was truly great.

I used to study jazz vocals with the late great Gery Scott. I had to audition for a spot, of course, and before I could audition, there was a sort of screening interview. In the usual way I was asked for my influences, and she told me later that it was naming Dinah Washington that got me the audition. "Never sang a word she hadn't lived", said Gery, who had known her.

Guy's under the bed, right? Daughter says she doesn't know him. Surely the thing you do is tell daughter to get the hell out of the room and call the police, while you stay in the room and make sure the punk doesn't get up until the cops arrive?

Why has no-one commented on the "biologically female" thing? It seems odd to add the word "biologically" to qualify the adjective "female". Could it be that this reaction is because the LW feels and presents as male? Because that might put a different spin on it. Not that I disagree with Dan's advice, especially if the roommate is cool about it.

Last year I was visiting Albany NY for a convention. As I left my hotel for the Sunday sessions, I saw the housemaid, a middle-aged lady, cleaning out the room opposite, and realised it might not be her shift when I checked out the next day, so I should tip her then. (We don't tip in Australia and I live in constant fear of undertipping.). It was my third day there so I gave her $20.

I'm not particularly rich, but $20 doesn't seem like a very large sum of money to me. But the housemaid was so grateful I felt embarrassed. She said "You don't know what this means to me", and when I came back she had left a note in my room telling me I was wonderful. I left another tip for her at reception when I checked out, but it sort of haunts me that anyone should be so grateful for a pathetic $20.

My parents didn't have much money, but I had a publicly funded University education (that I repaid from an additional tax hike once I reached a certain income level), and we have national health care, and now I have a job that means I can travel to America and tip the housemaid $20 without pain. I feel ashamed that someone should be in a position where $20 means so much to them, and it occurs to me that had I been born in America, that could easily have been me.

Love me all types and varieties of gay men, but I do loathe the swishy Hispanic waiter on Two Broke Girls, mainly because that show has gone from being witty and original to being almost entirely based on milking stereotypes. Han is tiny and Asian and effete, ha! Sophie is blowsy and Polish, LOL! Earl is old, cool and black, hilarious! Oleg is Russian and sleazy, it kills me! And now whatever his name is swishy-gay and Latino! The script has almost replaced jokes with set-piece reminders of each cliched characteristic, and applause as each archetype walks in. I'm really tired of it. Though I'm wondering where are the cheapskate Jewish nerd, the aggressive Irish drunk, and the surprisingly feisty old nun?

That excellent Cracked article is missing one male character we need to see more of: the hunky, ultra-masculine gorgeous guy who the female lead picks up, to the envy of her friends, only to discover that (gasp!) he has female genitalia. Which is huge fun for her friends because the female lead is totally humiliated by this slight to her femininity. We never see the hunky guy again, but presumably he was expecting this outcome, and it's not as if he's a real character anyone will relate to.

I am going for a tiered stack of washed rind cheeses, with fruit and a mini bride and groom on top. So it will look like a cake, but: CHEESE!!!

@36, 37 and 41 - that's NOT what's going on here. This is about rape rates in a particular region, not by a particular race. Black men in Uganda behave differently from black men living in Scandinavia; white men in PNG will behave differently from white men in New Zealand. (And way to go, let's not even acknowledge the existence of Pacific races!!). It's about culture, not colour.
Sep 9, 2013 Fishface commented on The New York Times Hates Tipping.
Here is Australia we pay service staff a living wage and tips are genuinely a gratuity. A friend who has been resident in the US for a long time has a theory that tipping is a remnant of a slavery culture - paying the people who serve you is discretionary; you don't owe them anything, but you might magnanimously gift them something. Not sure about that, but the more time I spend in the US, the truer it seems.

I overtip like crazy when I'm in the US, and I will be from Friday; I deeply worry about low-paid workers in a country without publicly funded health care.
