I think The Stranger should send Charles to Wyoming. Have in spend a few days in a more diverse working city like Rock Springs (because of the oil and mining work) then visit Cheney in Jackson. He can work his way over to Newcastle, with a big oil refinery next door to the middle school and high school while visiting Devil's Tower and Mt. Rushmore and make one last stop at Pine Ridge.

Some small weeklies are doing well, some are not. Three in our small group are growing, circulation and ad sales. A couple are stagnant and a couple are shrinking. About the same as it has always been.
Legals have been saving us during the recession and the total destruction of our classifies, but with an improving economy a lot of those legals will go away. Most likely when other local businesses start doing better, we will too.
When Paul talks about newspapers going away he means metro papers, the only kind that "count."
If nobody else covers the news in your area, people still tend to buy the paper. Not a lot of people want to work as journalists for free in small rural communities so we don't get many competing websites and most of our websites are online versions of phonebook listings with easy access to obit and wedding forms.
