Forget about Dad's porn. It's irrelevant to this situation. Gay, bi, or straight, this isn't about Dad. It's about Mom's depression. True, most people who write about suicide in their journals don't go through with it, but that's no reason to act as if it couldn't happen. Because it does happen. If you've lost someone in your life to suicide, you know how it can seem like everything's going to be okay with that person and then the next day, s/he's gone.

No matter what, writing about suicide and increasing alcohol dependency point to serious depression for Mom, and she needs to get herself help. LW can be a loving, non-judgmental, supportive aid to that process, just by opening the conversation and listening.

@47, well said.
@42, thanks for the update. The irresponsibility of the dogs' owner sickens me.
@41/Buffy - thanks for the link, good article. Love the New Yorker. I agree with many of the points discussed, for example, that fatal dog attack statistics need to account for breed popularity. As the article points out, the scary difference about pit bulls is the way they fight, to exhaustion, and without mercy for a dog or child showing signs of surrender. That's what makes reasonable people nervous about pit bulls, especially since you can't go door to door telling people how to raise their animals correctly.

This report seems to be about a pack of feral dogs, not pets. No owners involved. It's my assumption, but I'm inclined to think that feral packs of other breeds could and would do the same thing.
However, I am so tired of pit bull advocates claiming media bias when dog attack statistics are published. If this really is all media bias, please direct me to your source, so that I can be better informed. I'm serious. If your source is your personal experience with the pit bulls you know, sorry, that isn't good enough for me. I have known several loving pit bulls. Yesterday while I was jogging with my neighbor, another neighbor's pit bull charged us, completely unprovoked (we were in the street by the pit bull's house), and bit my neighbor. (She isn't reporting the attack, BTW.) If your dog's breed happens to cause the most fatal dog attacks year after year (controlling for the popularity of the breed), it's not a personal criticism of you or your lovely dog.
My thoughts are with the victim's family and friends. How horrific to have someone you love die in this terrifying, painful way.

Urgh. Wish I had read these comments before going last night! So disappointing! I would rather have saved my money for next week!

@16, @19 and @20, exactly.

@3, my DUI lawyer friends tell me you're right. Trace amounts of alcohol linger in the body for about 10 hours after consumption, and medical pros can work backward to figure out how drunk you were, when. Here in Washington State, all of us have the right to refuse the breathalyzer in the field and wait for a test at the station, after a call to a lawyer. Lots of folks have their blood alcohol level determined hours after the accident.

Wow, Dan, there was a whole pile of issues in that letter and you handled all of 'em well. Bravo.

@1, I'm hoping the same thing. It seems like he's deathly afraid that someone will cheat on him someday because Mr. Dan Savage said that open relationships are okay. It says a lot about his trepidations as he starts dating. Some experience will show him that love and sex are not all black and white, and most people are good people.

@22 She is responsible for staying in a relationship that she didn't think was going where she wanted.

But it gets worse. Instead of saying, "I want to get married," or, better yet "I want to get married soon, do you see us getting married in 2 years or so? Because if not, I need to move on," she said, "you're not going to marry me, so I'm not giving this relationship 100%" which effectively meant, to her, "I'm withholding affection from you, that's what you deserve, but I accept no responsibility for this relationship." That is beyond simple bitchiness.

LOST's wife sounds like a coward who either thinks very little of men or thinks very little of herself. LOST is a fool for thinking marriage would make things better. They both got what they ordered.

@50 exactly. Is it also possible that the whole "I like people who aren't into me, but people who chase me aren't attractive to me" thing is about being scared of dating/risks taken in dating/putting yourself out there in general? If she only dates people she can reject, then she never gets rejected, right?

Very funny post, but I think you mean 30 sweaters, not 300. Unless he's marked the price down to $10.
