Tim Minchin does moral outrage songs better than anyone in this current generation of musicians. I absolutely love him, and this song was perfect for the situation. I love that it's getting notice in the States.

@2 The Central Park Five are who I thought of a lot when I watched Brendan's "confession". After seeing the documentary and how they were manipulated, it was especially appalling. Hasn't the Reid technique been banned for use in certain countries, at least for use in extracting confessions in minors?

This whole thing makes me sick to my stomach. I've got so much reasonable doubt about Steven Avery, where I'm not positive he's innocent, but I never could have convicted him. Yet Brendan, I actually am sure is an innocent in all of this. And it breaks my heart. When neither he, nor his mother, knew what "inconsistent" meant, I was in tears. Wrestlemania? Tears. First defense attorney? I think he made a blood vessel pop in my left eye. These convictions need to be vacated, because this was a travesty of justice.

@3 Then watch it on your damn laptop/phone/tablet with your friend's Netflix password!

This series was incredible. So frustrating. I remember thinking the case stunk to high heavens back when it was happening, and knowing the inner-workings, I'm sadly right. Poor Steven, but most of all, poor Brendan. My god, I can't get over what they did to him. Steven isn't necessarily the most sympathetic person because of the cat thing, but he didn't deserve to be locked up for 18 years for a rape he didn't commit, nor does he deserve to spend the rest of his life in prison for a murder he didn't commit. UGH.

@9 I'm a second generation Polish immigrant, and Polish on both sides. I had a Busia, Babcia, Dziadzia and Dziadzio. I'm on day three of the yearly pierogithon. Busia is still with us, but Dziadzia made the kolaczki. She makes the (shudders) sledzie.

Awesome story. Marcus is one hell of a kid. I understand why those notes upset you. I was an atheist at the age of five, despite going to a Catholic school and being raised in a Catholic family. Though I mostly kept my beliefs to myself, when I did speak about what I did and did not believe in, the "loving concern" of my classmates and teachers who would basically threaten me with tales of fire and brimstone was upsetting. Traumatizing, even. Really, that's how you try to get people on your side?

Or when the Pentecostal peers of mine were railing against Catholics, saying they would rot in hell for not believing in god the right way. I told them that I believe in none of it, but that my Busia is truly the most amazing human being I've ever met, and if there is this loving god out there, I can't imagine he'd punish her just because she goes to the wrong church. That shut them up quickly. Anyway, great piece, your son is an incredible young man, and his explanations for why things aren't real had me laugh my butt off.

Brazil is a brilliant film, and also my favorite Christmas movie of all time. The fact that American society is veering closer to the dystopian horror portrayed in Gilliam's classic is quite worrying indeed.

A twelve-year-old girl was just raped in Houston by a man in a public bathroom. Not a man in a dress "pretending to be a woman", but a man. These scare tactics are just bullshit, and open up transwomen to more violence and discrimination.

I finished the last year and a half of high school in a sort of "home school". It was an online high school taken from home, with real teachers I had to report to, real assignments and tests and deadlines, and I graduated with a real diploma. It was great for me because I have numerous health issues and was no longer able to attend school on a day to day basis. It was actually created with people like me in mind: folks too sick to go to school, or pregnant teens/teen moms who didn't want to drop out and get their GED. If people are going to be homeschooling their kids, there needs to be a lot of oversight it in, and perhaps use the model that my high school did, so you make sure the kids actually LEARN something. Also, the school lent us our own computers which were for school use only, so if shit was going on at home, you could have a way to contact your teacher about it. And since teachers are mandated reporters, it could give these kids a little bit of help in abuse situations.

Since he clearly has no issue with couples divorcing with how he dodged that question, does that mean he is a supporter of married gays who want to get divorced?
Sep 4, 2015 Mindymoo commented on Gay Couples in Rowan County, Kentucky, Issued Marriage Licenses This Morning.
I can't dismiss all Christians on the basis of their beliefs because of the truly good ones there are out there. Jimmy Carter? Pro choice, he's for gay rights, he's a champion of women's rights, and he was a southern Baptist minister! He even broke away from that particular denomination because of the hatred they spewed. I also have amazingly loving, supportive, progressive Christians in my family that try to be a Carter-style Christian, rather than a Davis-style Christian. And they don't even give me shit for being an atheist. In my family's case at least, they're sick of these dickbags giving modern-day Christians a bad name, but at the same time, maybe they should be out there raising a stink and using their voices to let the world know that Christian is not synonymous with ignorant, hatefilled douchebag.
