Apr 10, 2013 JSilver commented on Gay Couple Makes Florist Choose Between Supporting Gay Rights or Getting Sued.
Can't believe I'm about to try to get trolled, but I must say it. Seattleblues, this - "To play devils advocate for a moment, the general legal view has been that discrimination denies services to some group and as such is unjust. I merely note that in this case such a denial of general service isn't present. Nor is it at all likely." - is wrong.

Denial of a service is not the "general legal view" of discrimination. You don't need to show lack of access to a service in order for discrimination to be illegal. 'Separate but equal' is not an acceptable status, ethically or constitutionally. This has been true at least since 1954's SCOTUS decision in Brown v Board of Education. In this case, the service is private rather than public, but Washington law protects this couple from discrimination even in the private transaction. Whether you or this asshole florist like it or not, abiding by that law is a cost of doing business in our State. So uh, feel free to exercise your right to GTFO.

@5 and @9, yes to hunks. Also @9, yes to revelation that they aren't dead. I thought they were after my first time watching the show. But I just very recently watched again because my SO hadn't seen it, and they are definitely not already dead.

P.S. Shannon is the worst character. Almost as worst as Boone.
Jan 4, 2013 JSilver commented on ...And That Was the Last Anyone Ever Heard of Paul Ryan.
What everybody else said. This is not a Ryan original, and is the spin GOP has been putting on a post-cliff vote since before the new year. Not a primary-debate liability in the slightest. And in a general election, it's all just a set up for the typical "Dems did x and we did y" / "Nuh uh, that's not really how it happened" / "Yeah huh, that's literally how it happened" neener neener bullshit. How. Depressing.

I can't believe you left off: TNG, because TNG is infinitely better than DS9, which is nothing but an incredibly lame and incredibly blatant rip-off of Babylon 5, a far superior show. Also, @42. Ro Laren.
That socialist pizza party doesn't sound socialist enough. More sharing!

I too was incredibly disappointed to learn that the Paris Bakery and Cafe would more properly be called Vietnamese Restaurant. Not that I don't like Vietnamese, but it's like getting OJ when you were expecting milk. I picked up a baguette anyway, as that was what I came for. It was dry.

While I agree with this appreciation for Square Knot's choice not to overdo the kitsch, I must otherwise dissent. Food at this diner is solidly mediocre, and as @5 said, overpriced considering that fact. With so many excellent meals to be had in Georgetown, the only thing Square Knot truly has going for it is the fact that it's open when Smarty Pants is closed.
Jul 19, 2012 JSilver commented on SL Letter of the Day: Now Hold It.
It finally happened. I finally disagree with Dan Savage's advice. As someone with frequent UTIs my whole life, the idea of letting someone "hold it" like this makes my bladder ache with sympathy. As others have mentioned, this isn't just an issue of discomfort. Recurrent UTI can lead to antibiotic resistance, kidney problems, etc. This kink is not wort the endangerment for someone with this specific problem.
Dec 28, 2011 JSilver commented on SL Letter of the Day: Sound Counsel.
I'm surprised at the reaction in these comments. There is no indication that the roommate is having inordinately loud sex. If the walls are thin, then people who live in the house might hear some things going on in the next room. Welcome to communal living. I don't think it's right to put restrictions on when people can have sex in their own home. There are some perfectly reasonable ways to handle the issue. One is Dan's suggestion. Why is that being equated to ruining LW's hearing?! It doesn't sound like it would take much volume to drown out a normally-loud sexcapade. Omg, listening to music through earbuds, how horrific....? Or, yes, just play music in the open. Also reasonable. LW can do it, or roomie can do it. Either way works just fine, and I don't see how it makes roomie an asshole that this might be necessary. There is nothing here to suggest that roomie wouldn't acquiesce to the recommendation of music or other obscuring noise.

Basically, this is life with a roommate. Neither person is being unreasonable. Both have the right to live peacefully and do what they want in their own homes. Sometimes that means coming up with creative solutions. Dan's is perfectly acceptable.
