Thank God I cut up all my cards years ago and learned to live without them. Though it was infuriating to realize it at the time, in retrospect, the $53 I paid for that taco was worth every penny.

@4 - I guess my point was this isn't a penalty, at least in the traditional sense of the term: when they charge you a fee because you broke one of their bullshit rules, like paying on the actual day a bill is due instead of three months ahead of time, or entering the bank with your hair parted to left instead of to the right on a Tuesday. In other words, to rob you in the present. This sounds like they're engineering a decline in their customers' credit scores, which would entitle them to raise interest rates accordingly and rob their customers for years to come . . .
That sounds like a new kind of scam.

If I understand this, a bank figured out how to automatically damage your credit rating, just by being a consumer of one of their products, so they can turn around and charge you more interest when they damage your credit rating. Did I get that right?
