OH my god I'm so tired of this stupid lightsaber thing. NO, nobody has invented lightsabers. They did demonstrate a cool behavior of light which previously was entirely theoretical, but it's just stupid click-bait junk journalism of the worst kind of claim that this is any kind of step towards lightsabers. Just stop.

A neat idea, but oh so many problems with it. Current phones have nearly all the pieces very tightly integrated, both for space and energy use reasons. Breaking them out into lots of little pieces is both going to dramatically decrease the actual usable volume of space in the phone, and greatly increase energy usage. Additionally:
We already tried this in PCs, and outside of a few dedicated gamer types, most people now get all in one PCs with limited ability to be upgraded. Why? The cost of upgrading major pieces like the motherboard and CPU quickly approach the cost of just replacing the whole thing, and most people just don't bother.
Having different blocks from different manufacturers means a welcome back to driver hell. Don't need to be worrying about buggy driver conflicts on my phone.
Evolving standards would probably mean that pretty quickly, your "base" piece would need an upgrade that would make all of your blocks obsolete, or incompatible with your new base.
Thermal issues: Having each piece be in its own enclosure means little chance for heat to escape. That processor block is going to get pretty hot.
Also, phones are fashion statements as well as phones. People like getting a new one and showing it off.

Yeah I think claustrophobia may actually be what kills the thing. The pods are quite small - once you're in your seat, there is no way to get up or move at all, and the walls and ceiling are inches from you in every direction. Just being confined in a seat with 27 other people in a tiny tiny enclosed capsule is a pretty surefire recipe for massive passenger panic attacks.
