It's not very popular.

My best is that the fierce urgency of whenever will prevail, Obama will make some mealy-mouthed equivocation that he hopes will placate conservatives, but which will a) enrage/continue to disappoint his base and b) won't make a single person who was not going to vote for him change his mind and vote for him.

@11--that drives me nuts. I've lived in the US for 12 years, had my citizenship for 6, and every time I open my mouth to either say "yeah, this thing about Canada is cool," or "yeah, I don't like this about the US," I get "WELL WHY DON'T YOU LEAVE." It's as if being an immigrant--who pays taxes and has a passport--suddenly means you have to love it 100% or leave it. Drives me nuts.

@19, I agree. Trent Diesel can do anything he wants to me, any time.

@14: Whatever. Criticizing the status quo and suggesting that things could be different/better isn't "hating America." Half the reason the country is in the mess it is is because Republicans were so good at demonizing anyone who disagreed with them (and their tax cuts, screwing the poor, useless wars) as "hating America/Freedom/Apple pie."

The idea that criticism=lack of patriotism (at best) or treason (at worst) is something usually reserved for places like China and North Korea.

This, of course, highlights to me the great nonsense about "freedom" meaning no socialized healthcare. Having universal health care gives people far greater freedom: You can lose your job and not be afraid. You can also quit your job and not be afraid of health care costs. You're free to start your own business and not worry about getting group insurance. You're free to get sick, basically, without worrying that you'll never get health care again or go bankrupt. 80% of personal bankruptcy in the US is because of medical expenses. The percentage in Canada/Scandinavia/Europe? 0.

And to #6: You're wrong. The idea that socialized systems have some sort of death panels/committees that decide what you can and cannot have is nonsense. This guy would get taken care of, hands down. It might not happen as quickly as someone with a super cadillac plan, but a hell of a lot quicker than your average wage jockey in the US. And he wouldn't have the fear that he'd get kicked off healthcare afterward, either.

Also, I've seen Brison at a gay club dancing with his shirt off in Toronto (and he appeared to be jonesing for a 3way with me and a friend, or certainly was quite entranced by our butts), and Baird has dated friends of mine (guys). They both totally know the meaning of the term.

The debate is ridiculous. It's just Republicans trying to say "Notwithstanding our views that straight rich white men should rule the world, and notwithstanding the war(s) on drugs/choice/gays/minority-voting/healthcare/education/etc, anyone who wants to marry the person of they love and have a kid or two is actually Republican." I know many, many, many (perhaps the overwhelming majority of the people I know) who want exactly the same.

Sorry, Republicans, not all Democrats want to live in a hippie commune where everyone jointly raises the kids and has orgies or lives in three/four/five/+dog relationships.
Dec 14, 2010 DeanP commented on Germans Have Issues.
Actually, the Germans do have a poo obsession. At least, the ones I knew when I lived there did. German toilets have a little shelf, so instead of dropping into the water, they land on a shelf so that the poo can be inspected (apparently the consistence/colour reveals information about diet and health, which is true when you've eaten Mexican/Indian but apparently the Germans have a more sophisticated analysis.) Then, when you flush, the water sweeps it off the shelf into the water and away. Resulting, of course, in more smell (since it doesn't just get into the water), and more, uh, streak marks.

All your moniez should be going to the American Foundation for Equal Rights--it's the organization that got prop 8 overturned. They've done more for gay rights (along, ack, with LCR) than HRC has ever done.
Oct 25, 2010 DeanP commented on It Gets Better: AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.
This is great not least because he does more than say "hang on, just wait it out, it'll get better"--he calls for MAKING things better, which is what we should be doing.

Now, we've got Trumka, Clinton, Obama . . . where are the Republican leaders? Oh yeah, they don't really care if it gets better, do they?
