@3 In the same book she talks about how women are punished for negotiating for raises.

Oh, to add what I said in @72. Wedding planning and marriage itself is a lot of back and forth and finding compromise. Take the time with yourself and your fiance to pick what is most important to you and pick which battles to fight. For ex: we got a ring TOGETHER, worked out a procession that was nontraditional and met both our needs, and I kept my name. Planning a wedding is not happy fun times and the sooner you realize that the better, but you don't have to sacrifice your principles for it. Work it out.

@61 Helped a newlywed couple search for a lost ring in the surf in Hawaii. Insure that shit!

Not A Ring Girl -

Dan is right. Pick your battles. I also did not give a shit about the ring, but my fiance (now husband) really wanted to get me something pretty. If your fiance is not a jerk about it, isn't trying to push gender roles or some red flag patriarchal wedding bs on you, I recommend you do what I do and let it go. Let him buy you that ring. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY be part of the buying process. Instead of it being a big hunk of money on your finger that you didn't want, it will be something you chose and love together.

I also didn't want kids or marriage at 11! Like @21, I ended up getting married and totally want children now, but I think at 11 I was starting to feel the gender roles expected of me and was feeling some cognitive dissonance between only viewing myself as a human while the whole world fixated on me being a girl. I wasn't a tomboy, but I was def trying to distance myself from the gendered life story society was trying to write for me.

@1 "I know WOMEN that have stopped their partners because they noticed the condom break because it feels better for THEM all of a sudden."

That's a totally different animal. Dan contests that men don't feel a different on their dick w/ or w/o a condom. NO ONE contests that a condom feels different inside a vagina.

@83 " one's orientation is something one's friends should know. "

It is? Why?

@12 That would make sense if you could actually take steps to avoid being raped. But since you cannot dress or act or do anything to make men see you as a person with agency or autonomy, it's a worthless exercise wasted on victims rather than perpetrators.

@5 I also loved reading about science as a kid and that's why I'm in STEM! But I also heavily explored it through the fiction of sci-fi. I learned it through story games on the computer. I felt it by playing the violin. Science requires us to look beyond what is right in front of us. Beyond what we are taught in school and the formulas on the page. How can we do that if we are not able to journey beyond our immediate possibilities?

Aside from the metaphors. I write and read a shitton of technical writing and you can absolutely tell the people who did not spend a lot of time writing about boring "thinking and feeling" shit in highschool - they have the most soulless, uninspired, passionless writing style. I want to take them to an art museum and sit them in front of a jackson pollock for a day.
