White People Do Not Have a Monopoly on Racism.
I guess I understand the refusal to serve foreigners. I've run into that in France, Spain, Malta, even once at a po-dunk little bar outside of Winnipeg. What surprises me is the special dislike and distrust of black foreigners (from all over the world- not just American).

@9- Again, no. racial and ethnic enmity is probably one of the most bedrock features of human culture. I made a comment about how racist the US was to a Croatian friend. his reply was "Yes, the US is the most racist place on earth, except for the rest of the earth." I always thought that was a great sentence.
@10- I'd never heard of a Japanese bias against Muslims. I know that several black folks mentioned that their likelihood of being allowed into any given bar was about 50/50, and much lower outside of the big cities. Hopefully things have changed.

Seattle, You Should Be Better Than This.
we are never going to end homelessness. Lets just make that clear. There are tons of homeless people in even the most progressive, socialist nations. No policy, service safety net or anything else will eliminate the problem. A few more shelters will keep people from hypothermic death, some access to basic health care may eliminate a few of the pneumonia cases.
Just decide which tiny piece of the puzzel you're willing to pay to fix, and we'll get to work on that...but know what we can and cannot do.

Seattle's Building Codes Will Include New Green Energy Provisions.
@1- A solar cell expert can tell you more about the specifics, but yep, solar works just fine here.
I very much like the concept of quantity over efficiency, in terms of solar cells. The idea is that we don't really need to fuss as much with making each cell and each installation super efficient, but worry more about putting cells up in large quantity.

Verity Credit Union Cancels Pot Bank Accounts.
@3 - I think you didn't get the joke.
And yes, this is one of about a dozen major obstacles we all saw coming...how does a financial institution w/ FDIC insurance participate in an activity or market that is federally illegal?
So how long will it take to recoup the costs of working through all these hurdles? We all knew the pie in the sky numbers were bullshit, but no one really had a good concept of just how complex setting up a 'from scratch' retail market would be, given we have no recourse to outside resources.

Fatal Car Crashes Are Down.
Here's a link to an NHTSA report with simple graphs. There is also a lot of good explanation about the use of the data, which might be fun for some.
2009: 77% of DRIVER fatalities in MT tested positive for drugs. 38% in WA. Interesting stuff. In 2009 304 of our 416 traffic fatalities (487-if you include bikes and pedestrians-not sure if NHTSA includes them) were drivers. I wonder how many non-drivers also died in those incidents with the 38%, and what percentage of those incidents have the drug-positive driver at fault (because while 2 are often correlated, they are not 100% causal) I'm totally at a loss as to where to get the drug-specific data, -it makes sense that many would also test positive for alcohol, and the next runner up would be weed. Also would like a rural/urban breakdown. Maybe on my next break I can dig that up.

The Wednesday Morning News.
Self- serving plug. We are having a large-scale debate on gun control tonight at the Mukilteo City Hall (11930 Cyrus Way, Mukilteo) at 7pm. Members of local Police departments, 2nd Amendment Foundation, and members of the local HS debate team acting as seconds on both sides. Moderated by state Rep Marko Liias. It will be covered by TVW, and likely shown in the next couple weeks, But if you wanna be there, and have something to say, (ask a question, demand an answer, etc) now might be a real good time to actually get off your ass and come out.
