John Corvino: Sodom and Gomorrah.
My Christian friends happen to love John Corvino, because he talks gently and doesn't insult them for believing, while showing them ways they can hold onto their faith and also let go of bigotry. This is something they can show their families, to better explain how they can support equality and still go to church.
Having had my share of misogynistic, rape apologizing, transphobic, homophobic, racist, classist, etc atheists (and I AM an atheist), I don't think secularism alone is the answer. There's room enough for all sorts of approaches. No one method is a silver bullet for changing all minds.

"He Will Become One Of The First Men In The World To Have A Penis Built From His Own Arm".
It's The Sun, so I'm not surprised by how they're portraying it, but there's nothing new in this surgery that's going to make a phalloplasty fully functional in the ways that really counts. If it has sensation at all, it'll be on par with having your arm rubbed. The surgery described there (flesh tube rolled up from the arm and grafted onto groin) is what's been around for ages.

SL Letter of the Day: The Missing Condom.
It's not that they don't understand,
they just don't like the answer.
The "oh, I didn't know what you meant" claim is bullshit used to cover up trampling on someone else's autonomy. If we can figure out how to drive in traffic (so many subtle cues from other cars!), we can figure out how not to fuck people without condoms without their consent.

Elementary School Rejects PETA's Offer of "Free Lunch".
@24 There are, as evidenced by this thread. My point is that seeing animal carcasses doesn't automatically turn a child into a vegan. Whether someone decides to be vegan or a meat eater, it seems sensible to me for them to understand where their food came from.
People should fully grasp and face where their food comes from and then make their choice with all of the information at hand. Yes, PETA is obnoxious as hell and relies on shock tactics, but where is the harm in letting children know where their food comes from and at what cost? How is ignorance of this basic fact of their daily lives beneficial? If the reality of meat is so horrific that it would give children nightmares, then...why feed them meat?

Somehow, farm kids don't all grow up to be vegans. In fact, all the ones I know are avid meat eaters.
Perhaps it's primarily squeamish adults who are all "Ewwww, icky! This dead animal I'm eating may have suffered before its death!"? If you think showing someone how their food is made is a horrible ethical nightmare...why the hell are you eating factory farmed meat in the first place?

The Universal Human: "Looking At This Map For 5 Seconds Will Change How You Think About Race".
I'm rather skeptical about the skin color map, as the average Ojibwe person and the average French person are most certainly not the same skin tone. It's true that the average temperature and sunlight in a region will have an effect on the people who are indigenous to that area, but it's not quite as clear cut as the map makes it out to be.
I'm also not sure how that map would "change how [I] think about race" unless I'm completely ignorant of people being affected by their climate.

His Life Had Purpose.
@28 No, everyone doesn't do it. I know some dangerously irresponsible people who have done it, but the vast majority of people I know--including myself--have never driven after having a drink.
It's incredibly easy to not get a DUI citation. Incredibly, absurdly, stupidly easy.

A Theory of White Native Americans.
Even in the earliest days of the genocide, white people were "going native" and claiming to be "noble savages." One of the most celebrated incidents in US history--the Boston Tea Party--is an example of white men putting on NDN costumes in order to lay claim to a uniquely American identity. They steal Native culture and identity because they've already stolen the land and this way they can claim legitimacy.
This isn't about numbers. It's about ownership. Settlers want that ownership and always have. They want that legitimacy and that claim to this land. They want to wash the blood off the wealth of this country by claiming they have a right to it. They have a better claim to it when there's no one around to argue against them, yes, but that doesn't mean they sat around waiting for the original owners to go away. No, they did everything they could to silence the first people here, whether through murder, starvation or simply cultural destruction.
To claim that "playing Indian" has only appeared recently and is the result of the genocide instead of one of the earliest causes of it is outrageously offensive and myopic.
