Sound Check.
@13 "Not much of a desire in the community"? With 600 students?
SDS is simply an awesome place, for both students and parents. My kid took lessons there all during his formative years—from several different teachers, all of whom were great. He learned to play the drums, but he also got so much more in terms of emotional and intellectual support when he most needed it. I can't say enough about how much that experience meant to him and to me.
I have a feeling that SDS has a much larger constituency than just the 600 current students. There must be thousands of alums, plus their families. Please keep us informed of what is going down and what we can do about it. I for one am willing to write, call, attend meetings, or whatever else needs to be done to keep the school in existence.

Slog's Annual Pride Flag & Space Needle Poll.
Space Needle Corp. couldn't give a shit about the GLBTQ community, much less progressive liberal values. They only care about $. In 25 years living in Seattle, I've been up the SN once, and thought it incredibly tacky. Now, when visitors come to town, I take them to the water tower in Volunteer Park (higher, 50% more view, free!)

University of Washington to Offer Its First Ever Online-Only Degree.
The Gates Foundation has a lot to answer for, from promoting GMO agriculture (and if you don't think that's a problem, read today's story on honey bees in the NYT), to promoting the universal circumcision of all sub-Saharan adult males (which may very well turn out to be counterproductive by increasing the incidence of HIV infection, especially in females), to this. Thanks, Bill!

Amanda Knox Can Cross Italy Off Her List of Places to Visit.
When in Rome last year I happened across a very interesting book: "Monster of Florence," by Douglas Preston, an American journalist. It details the crimes of a notorious serial killer operating in the countryside around Florence in the 1970s an 80s, and the subsequent arrests and trials of various people implicated or accused. Basically, the outcome of the case was a massive fuck-up. The investigation was led by the same prosecutor who is now pursuing Amanda Knox. Perhaps most interestingly, his "theory of the crime" in the Florence murders is strikingly similar to the one he formulated for the Kirchner murder, i.e., vast conspiracies among multiple perpetrators influenced by Satanic ritual, etc. The book is well worth reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in this case.

The New Yorker on Seattle's MAP Boycott.
OT, but the NYT has an op-ed this morning in which we're told that the Gates Foundation is funding a campaign to have every sub-Saharan African male circumcised, ostensibly to help prevent the spread of AIDS (although the article allows that the campaign may well end up increasing its incidence, especially among women). The campaign is "voluntary" — so far.

The Ramen Rater Hits 1000 Reviews.
I hate to think what oils he's consuming. When I lived in Taiwan (last century), a company there was convicted of using reprocessed crankcase oil in its "flavor packets."
