I kind of adore the copyright 1972 tattoo.

@16 I think mailing in a blank ballot counts as voting. And that's the only way to make a political statement about abstaining. I routinely leave half the ballot blank for various reasons.

The container ships are stacking up near Blake Island. There were two of them last night and it looks like a third may have joined this morning.

@4 The 5% figure is getting distanced from the original quote, "Over 95 percent of Americans have no direct tie to the veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars."

I may believe that. I know veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan and I know current service members, but I don't know that I have a "direct tie" to any of them.

But certainly a much greater percentage of Americans have a connection to some veteran.

The problem isn't the body cams, but the distribution of the videos. The police should make these available for viewing in their stations or in the county courthouse. Every video could be made available for viewing, but not copying. The same goes for 911 calls. Let journalists listen to them and take notes. There is no reason for them to broadcast the actual audio.

I will add that I actually loved the movie. It is nice to see something worth discussing! Even if much of the discussion is about what a mess it is. I will likely see it again in IMAX just to drag some more people to it this weekend.

I recommend the book "The Physics of Interstellar" by Kip Thorne which just came out. I've been reading it this past weekend and it is quite a good primer on a lot of the science in the movie and is very readable with a lot of pretty pictures and stories about making the movie.

However, it does confirm my fear about the movie. Kip Thorne went to lengths to justify Nolan's story choices as "possible" in the most loose sense rather than being in any sense "probable".

So, they could justify the years to hours relativity effect on the water planet by making the black hole as massive at the one at the center of the Andromeda Galaxy even though we've never detected a black hole that massive outside of a galactic center. The water planet would be orbiting at a significant fraction of the speed of light. This justifies the waves on the planet. However, that black hole wasn't very photogenic so they rendered a much smaller black hole for the graphics.

It reminds me of Ed Wood in the Burton movie justifying his shoddy filmmaking by explaining that the characters were just clumsy. Yes, that's possible, but it's more probable the characters would be able to walk through the doors in their house without hitting the frame.

I think the thing that irritated me most about the movie itself was the "best pilot we've ever had" trope and the happen to live within driving distance of NASA combined with, but we've never bothered to phone you up to see if you want to pilot our ship. And then of course you can train up for the two year voyage to Saturn in about 24 hours because, why bother with a training montage.

@6 Yes, I was a bit annoyed at the end when she seems to be starting a colony by herself. Even though the humans have long had the capability to send spacecraft along after her. However, they did mention there were ten incubators on board.
Nov 10 fletc3her commented on Youth Pastor Watch: They Let These People into Public Schools?.
The comment about GSAs is obvious troll bait, but I went ahead and did some News searches. "Youth pastor arrest" comes up with some immediate results akin to the stories in this post, pornography charges, sex assault at church, etc.

I can't find a combination of keywords having to do with GSA, GLSEN, or other youth groups which specifically deal with the LGBT community which comes up with any crimes at all. Although, of course some of the youth pastors attacked children of the same sex.

Of course every GSA, GLSEN, and LGBT youth group must take the possibility of abuse by the adult volunteers seriously. However, in my experience, they actually do. They screen every volunteer with a background check and ensure that interactions between the adults and the youth are properly monitored.

Gentrification isn't the replacement of local businesses by chains. It is the gradual process of an area becoming more expensive because of the influx of new residents and businesses. Eventually existing businesses and residents are forced to move because prices and rents price them out. Every new restaurant is a part of the process although some restaurants may find themselves being victims of it later.

I don't think there's any point to trying to stop gentrification. It's part of the natural cycle of the city. We see the reverse process at work in some areas as well as businesses dry up and properties lay vacant. Though that is increasingly occurring out in the 'burbs rather than in the city proper.
